My hard drive was making weird noises and my computer kept freezing up, so I decided to make an image backup. After getting a few blue screens and "failed to boot" messages, I finally got it to work. But about halfway into the backup, something made this extremely loud noise, similar to a hair buzzer, so I forced a shutdown.
I am absolutely terrified to turn it back on, and I cannot afford to lose even a single file.
I thought I could try again but in safe mode, and make file backups of my most important stuff before trying another image backup. I also asked a friend about this, and he said he could lend me a thing that connects directly to the drive, but he said that usb ports might not work in safe mode.
What do I do about all this?

What? You don't have a backup?
>What do I do about all this?
You dun goofed
Remember: Data you don't backup, is data you don't care about.

I wrongfully assumed my computer would last more than a year.

Thanks. Does this work with Windows? It looks like a Linux thing.

There are cables that connect to a hard drive on one end and 1 or 2 usb ports (the second port is for power supply) on the other end. You can use these or simply install the drive on another desktop computer as a slave drive. Migrate your files over, then re-install OS on the suspected faulty drive and migrate them back.

I forgot to mention that this is a laptop. Will it still work like that?
