vim is a text editor
nano is a text editor

vim, same as nano, was designed to edit config files

folks who mutilate vim and transform it into a frankenstein IDE because "muh terminal for everything" are the retarded ones

Isn't that amazing? I mean, I can literally pull up my IDE that is Qterminal, and do anything I like with it, with less resources than any GUI based IDEs

I used to think that and maybe in small config files where you just want to make a quick edit and save it, nano is fine but vim has so many features for navigating files and editing texts thats it's better suited in most situations.

Great choice for system programming, but it has its caveats. Make sure to learn what functions are unsafe (ex. - anything that reads input into a buffer, but which doesn't do bounds checking). Known attacks can and will fuck your shit up if you don't watch out.

If you want an example of this, at Princeton University, a course is taught on system programming - COS217. If you google that, you can find the course site. They link to some nice resources concerning buffer overflow attacks and the like. Get to know that stuff well before you start any serious project.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

Many computer users run a proprietary version of the Linux kernel every day, without realizing it. I got a thinkpad and switched to linux befor I ever went to /g/. Thinkpad because I had one as a kid and remembered loving the clit mouse by comparison to any trackpad, the only reason I stopped using it is because It was too underpowered for gaymen. I eventually built a desktop but It was long gone by then.
Linux because I want nothing to do with anything windows or microsoft after Win10. Even if seven is good I'd rather have an OS that isn't slated for death for normal use. Though still 7 for a few games.
Also, high quality headphones before ever visiting /g/ too, because I remember how good the switch from earbuds to decent headphones and from youtube+low bitrate MP3 to FLAC+High bitrate MP3 sounded, wasn't dissapointed.
Also vim, its great.

a buffer is an open file. even when you "quit" (:q) from a frame in vim, the file stays open in a buffer. You can use ctrl+n and ctrl+p to search buffers and cool shit like that.

JavaScript.

Web apps have a huge advantage -- they have no installation overhead. Just type in a URL and go. That gives them a reach and convenience that is absolutely unmatched by any other application deployment platform. They span all platforms of all sizes, with the single exception of headless servers.

Like it or not, JavaScript is ***THE*** programming language of the web client side. No other language is even a distant contender.

Thus, JavaScript is ubiquitous and accessible like no other language could possibly be.

JavaScript isn't going away. It's not "3 years away from being replaced by something better". Just the opposite -- the corporate commitment to JavaScript grows stronger every year. People once wondered if languages like TypeScript or Dart might overtake JavaScript. That may have been a reasonable question to ask 5 years ago. But today, the answer is: Noooope -- not even a remote possibility. As the years advance, the probability of JavaScript being replaced on the web client grows vanishingly small.

It really doesn't matter how much you think the language sucks. It defines the web client, it's everywhere, and it's abso-fucking-luetly here to stay.
>>
>>58606868
>8 character tabs in C

Incorrect. You use tabs to indent specifically so that everyone can choose their own indentation amount by configuring their editor to their own preference. That's specifically why using tabs for indentation is objectively superior -- it instantly shuts down all debate about indentation amounts.

Tabs to indent, spaces to align.

This is true. Also, writing immutable, functional JS2017 with object rest/spread via babel handles like a dream. I basically write JS the same way I write C now, except way less verbose and ornate. Some problems naturally require you to have multiple nested ifs, since you only have to check something if something else is true, or even loops in some cases, how are you supposed to avoid that? Like it may be a good idea in general to avoid it as much as possible, but I'm pretty sure even Linus doesn't have a problem with it when it is obviously the most elegant way to do something.
>>
>>58632551
Why?
>>
>>58633208
Partly because it's not true, it's not significantly easier than other reasonable programming languages, so people should instead focus on choosing the right tool for the job (GUI software on linux? C. Web shit? PHP, Python, some other popular environment. Android apps? Java. GUI software on windows? C++, maybe C# or something else, I'm not that familiar with windows), and partly because some of these people will get good at programming and then go on to write software for linux in python instead of something else with less overhead, and then I'll have to use their crap on my machine.
>>
>>58633406
>so people should instead focus on choosing the right tool for the job
But often they don't know what the job is, so how can they decide which tool to pick up? Python is like a multi-tool, can do almost any basic task competently but doesn't excel at anything particularly advanced.

Bear in mind that many people learning programming want to use their skills to solve small problems, at the start. A scripting language with simple syntax is better suited to that than something that's more powerful but more difficult to write.
