So many companies make literally BILLIONS from Linux but nobody wants to make high quality software for home desktop use for it.

What's the deal?
>>
They don't need the software themselves or they would make it.

Red Hat is a company that makes billions from linux and also produces high quality software for home desktop use for it.

Companies make literally billions using Caterpillar 797s but nobody wants to be a high quality consumer mechanic for one.

Whats the deal?

Software these days earns money in subscription-based system. You are not paying for software itself but for a support that you get with it.
For any company it's a choice between setting up whole division dedicated for that piece of software or have professionals one call away.

This kind of support is impossible for home uses. Imagine amount of phonecalls you'd get because someone rm -rf / since someone over internet told him to.

Microsoft gets away with their current model just because we were not used to this kind of service.
