I have a mini fanless computer like pic related. I'd like to use it as a router, with fast wireless for Steam Streaming from a headless tower to my laptop. Should i use a router-specific OS, and what antenna should I get for fast WiFi?

antenna gain has little impact on transfer speeds. what you neet is two wlan interfaces of 802.11ac standart, and also i would recommend using interface with two antennas separate for RX and TX you can achieve this using openwrt.

which interfaces would you suggest? i'm looking to spent maybe $40 for the wireless antennna. i see a lot of usb adapters, are these crap?

lol

I bought for $20 two tp links wr741nd when they were on sale, flashed openwrt, played bit with config to get them act like dumb access points and the best possible covered ever through large house and garden

recently I even managed turning one in to wireless client repeated, so no more need for cat5 going in to it anymore

slap OpenWRT on it
If youre not satisfied with its wireless performance, get a proper access point, Unify and Linksys are hints.

will the access points work easily with openWRT? can they be added to an existing router to increase the wireless speed?

You obviously don't know how wireless lan works. First read a bit more about it and then think if your idea is (even remotely) possible.
