What the fuck should I use to sync data between my laptop and desktop?
Google/Microsoft/Mega/Other proprietary services are out of the question.
I tried Owncloud and it's shit.
I used Syncthing for two years and although it's not shit it's not great either. It's slow and eats battery life like mad.
I don't want Rsync. I want something automatic. Based from that, I don't think Unison is what I want either.
I don't see myself using git since it's not automatic and kinda shit for binary transfers.
I guess what I really want is something like an NFS share cached on disk. This cache would be kept across reboots and allow the laptop to work even when it's unable to reach my desktop.

What can I use? What do you use in order to sync your data?
>>
I've been using Resilio Sync (was BitTorrent Sync) myself; the initial setup is a bit klunky, but it works well for me, and sounds close to what you're looking for.
>>
I am using Infinit and I am pretty happy with it

Nah man. I've been living free of proprietary userland software for years now, I don't intend to go back. Thanks for the input anyway.

Link? Couldn't find anything online.

Well it's free but not open-source infinit.io/

[anon@gentoo]$ whatis rsync
rsync (1) - a fast, versatile, remote (and local) file-copying tool
[anon@gentoo]$ whatis anacron
anacron (8) - runs commands periodically

>runs commands periodically
That's nothing like a cached file system brah, unless I make it run every 30 seconds and then battery use would probably be awful.

Well, you've already listed and dismissed every product available the free and proprietary market, so you've only got the improvised solutions left.

And by the way, it's true that rsync+a cron job don't do all the functions of say Dropbox with live file updates, handling file structure and version history, but it will periodically sync whatever you tell it to with a local or remote host. You can also fully automate the process.

If you're adamant on using specialised software and fear the proprietary Software-as-a-Service companies who trade your personal data and metadata to 3-rd parties, you may take a look at this site. Note the open source restriction:

Thanks mang. I took a look at most of the alternatives and nothing seems to do what I want. I guess I'll have to write my own software then.

literally nothing wrong with mega

Syncthing is not ideal (e.g. android version is very unreliable, out-of-sync/out-of-disk-space errors, no file locks, high cpu usage) but there nothing better if you want opensource solution.
BitTorrent Sync is not bad too, especially it you want to store your data on untrusted server.
>>58584121
infinit.sh not .io
But i would not recommend it.
While Infinit is free, debugging/statistics tools are not.
There is no android version.
Decentralised setup is unreliable AF
Distributed setup will fuck up all your data if 2 out of 3 servers will go offline even for a minute.
Client software is buggy AF
Infinit data is stored on a disk in weird chunks. E.g. it Infinit database will be corrupted - all data is lost.

>>58583954
Run rsync with cron jobs, automated transfers. Even Android has rsync with termux.
