Why do people compare Arch and Gentoo so much, the only thing they have in common is they offer no graphical installation.
>>
>>58574665
True. You cant compare Gentoo and Arch.

Good luck compiling chromium on T420 in less than 4 hrs.
>>
>>58574608
They're almost identical, with the only difference being gentoo also having to compile shit upon OS installation. So
>gentoo takes much longer to install
Period. The only noticeable difference.

But muh botnet meme!
>>
>>58574608
The only thing I've been able to gather is that Arch is le minimal unbloated (just like, say, minimal Debian lmao) and Gentoo users compile for the supposed optimisation.

Otherwise,

Systemd vs no systemd: think very hard on this one.
>>
>>58575046
Gentoo is minimal compared to arch like how arch is minimal compared to Ubuntu.
>>
>>58574695
What faggotry is this? They can replace each other as main desktop OS, surely a wise person would compare them before deciding.

You might as well ask, what color is better to write a suicide note in. Black is the standard but red is grim because it is blood colored. Both of these dropout distros are for unique types of dropouts but they are both for dropouts. The reason why you feel you need something like this is because you are trying to fill the gap of having a real career or running your own business. It is over for you before you even started. The quickest way out is not an operating system timesink, you can just rent a gun for $20 from any range. That is the quicker way out.

the reason I use gentoo isn't the optimisation but the customization options with USE flags, slots, masking, overlays and other features of portage.
>>

ganoo pro:
compile tight as fuck for your system and architecture
can update packages without breaking system
good combination of tested and up to date

ganoo cons:
one of the most dificult linux distros to install
requires knowledge about how to set compiler settings
compiling can take a long time

Arch pros:
good docs/wiki
very up to date
rolling release

arch cons:
its the autists distro of choice
updates break the system
bleeding edge

install is as simple as reading but you are correct about compiler settings although that is not too difficult to learn
>>
>>58575329
And what do USE flags, slots, masking, overlays, etc do for you?
>>
>>58575836
Just use the defaults, what's there to learn? I don't care about -O3 one fucking bit. The only important things are DEFAULT_EMERGE_OPTS, FEATURUES and MAKEOPTS. Everything else can be autogenerated.
>>
>>58575892
>Just use the defaults, what's there to learn?
sometimes even default flags don't compile

Really? I guess that can happen depending on configuration and what sort of strange program one tries to compile. I only know of the reverse, programs not working properly with anything above -O2.

>>
>>58574896
I don't see how compiling from source is an issue if you're downloading stable software that won't have major updates and security flaw discoveries frequently. My world should be as stable as possible
>>
>>58574608
Fuck it, I'll only list forces of both distros here.

Both have a great wiki. The Gentoo handbook is GOAT. Gentoo is bundled without systemd by default, while Archlinux does require it (which is great too for baby's first server).

While Archlinux fades in the background to teach one the pure Unix learning curve with Vim, Emacs, programming languages, etc., Gentoo is great for one to learn how Linux and a compiler work in the details, with USE flags, kernel optimizations, etc.

And they share a common, major weakness: their local communities are dead (so anyone would need to learn English prior to becoming good in computers).
>>
>>58575892

So many people repeat this stupid shit.
Gentoo is like the most bloated distro you can fucking install.

what fonts are those?
>>
>>58579559
Nice try, but that's only a (smaller) portage tree and mostly distfiles (and maybe binary pkgs?). Have you tried cleaning up?
eclean-dist -dp

Or just nuke the entire /usr/portage. It won't break.
>>
>>58579522

Minimal in the sense of small binaries due to not compiling every feature that might be of use to anyone you faggots.

again it seems like you do not optimize for shit
>>
>>58579828
You aren't optimizing anything dude, its still an order of magnitude larger than any of the other big distributions.
>>
>>58579784
In this sense you're correct. Indeed the dependency/feature bloat/creep is much better contained behind USE flags.

then you should show people buy posting screen shots from other distributions

Debian's complete ffmpeg package install uses 2MB.

Because ffmpeg's libraries installed in separate packages in those. And ffmpeg executables depend on them either way.
