Any dinosaur computer experts here?
My old PC has a fairly decent Pentium 4, 3.00 GHz Dual CPU, 512 mb of DIMM DDR 400 RAM clocked at 166 MHz, an ATI Radeon 9200 SE Family edition (or something like that) with 128 mb of VRAM.
Now to my question.
Are there any normal Linux distros that even support this ancient hardware?
Planning to upgrade to 1.5 or 2 GB of RAM since the CPU has absolutely no trouble running XP and ""multitasking"" has been a problem in the last years.
tl;dr: I need a newer graphics card that'll support my Mobo (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/P4i65G/) and a Linux distro that works with my old hardware
And no, I won't buy a new one. It'll be my loonix tinkering computer
Most distros I would assume. Finding a newer graphics card for an old mobo would be harder.

>ancient
you don't know what "ancient" really means
i was running DSL smoothly on pentium mmx 200mhz, but with your hardware you can install anything. debian, ubongo, fedora, gentoo, lfs
>>58529715
Do you still have it?
>>58529715
PSU broke down, it's kinda difficult to find AT PSU in good shape now. But yeah, if nothing except psu died, i still do have it, with three different socket 7 PSUs.
I like tech junk, i even have working IBM XT class computer, 192kb ram and shit.

clicking right posts to reply is difficult task
>>58529584
Why are you getting a new graphics card when you are running on half a GB of RAM?
>>58529851
Haven't you read the post?
I'm upgrading to 1.5 or 2
>pentium 4
>fairly decent
>>58529899
It's able to browse the web, so it's fairly decent

kys newfag. fucking 15 year old thinks he's old cause he inhereted his dads shitputer
>>58529907
spend 2-300 dollars and get a used laptop from ebay put that thing you have jn the trash why do you refuse to buy newer hardware?
>>58529923
>>58529928
Because I already bought a new computer
>>58529938
so throw the old one out whats wrong with you?
>>58529584
This has got to be the worst commonly posted internet macro on the internet
It would be nice if I'd be able to remove the RAM without breaking the GPU.
I can still cut some of those zip ties I guess
>>58529584
That hardware isn't as old as you'd think, but personally I'd go for something like Ubuntu MATE- a just werx distro will probably save you some grief, unless you're comfortable installing something more difficult to use like Gentoo or LFS
Scour ebay for any old AGP graphics card. I'm assuming you're not going to try and game or something stupid like that on this right? If not, just get something that outputs video and call it a day. The drivers for that stuff will be legacy as fuck so it should run okay.

>Have Laptop I need to have Windows on I won't switch
>New office computer
Won't put loonix on there
>€30 to upgrade shitputer
Loonix machine
>>58529974
It's only to have something running in case my other two machines (one laptop, one desktop) get fucked in the ass
>>58529993
As someone who's been in that situation, not a bad thing to have.
I read the spec for that motherboard and it appears to have an integrated graphics processor on-board: perhaps that would be enough to serve your needs?
Otherwise, go wild anon

keeping your old junk around is what holds us back and it costs developers money having to support old garbage throw it in the trash stupid stop holding everyone else back you selfish fuck

Thanks

>>58529923
We got a tough talking fag here...
>>58529584
It's not a dual core, Pentium 4's had an SMT implementation under the brand Hyperthreading. The single core runs two threads, but the second doesn't perform nearly as well as the first.
>>58530119
dont forget all the heat it generates
>>58529956
wtf, do you have extra fat fingers?
>>58529584
that's not even that old
I have a machine somewhere with similar specs dual booting normal Debian and XP
>>58530242
There are no fingers in this video and my fingers are certainly not greasy
>>58530299
Well, the Mobo and CPU got an upgrade.
It was bough in around 2001 with a 700 MHz CPU or something like that
>>58530304
>>58530242
My fingers are kind of long and chubby so I'm having a hard time pressing those
I would use lubuntu.
>>58530341
m8 just go HAM and get those power cables out of the way. you won't damage the GPU by removing the RAM.
get some canned air up in that dustbucket while you're at it.
Why do you need a new graphics card though? If that one werx for web browsing I wouldn't go looking for trouble.
That's pretty much what I'm going to buy till now:
RAM for, well just look at the OP
WiFi dongle because it doesn't have WiFi built in (which is understandable considering its age)
>>58530455
Oops. Here's the picture
>>58529584
> ancient
GTFO
Voidlinux? Lxqt is good on it. Or tinycore, slitaz. Slitaz is a bit weird but it is working good.
Amazing how beautiful these are
>>58530468
>>58530997
The RAM I will be buying is CL 3.0
My old 512 mb RAM stick (pic related) has CL 25.
Wat do?
>>58531107
make old one run at cl 3 too
>>58531107
>>58531134
I'm a retard.
It's CL 2.5
>>58529584
>fairly decent Pentium 4
Almoste tempted to stop reading there
I get that youmay have attachement to that, but P4's are watt guzzlers. The only thing they are good for is heating rooms
But ok, many things will run on that, Fuck I had seen windows 7 running on sigle core P4's
Stick with a distro and then test different DE's
I use lubuntu (LXDE + ubuntu) to use in virtual machines and have multiple instances running each with 8 gigs of hdd, 1 gig of ram and 12 mb of video ram. all of that on a i5
So, yeah, you can bring life to that hardware with a lightweight desktop environment, but you'll be wasting watts son, anyway your money not yours
>>58529584
lubuntu, debian + lxde or windows xp
>>58531234
>your money not yours
Top kek
>>58531234
How many watts are we talking here?
20 more under load?
kek
>>58531973
do you even know the 478 P4's TDP bruh?
depending onthe model it ranges from 60 to 115W
Even in their day, P4's had horrible watt consumption compared to its AMD counterparts.
