Provided they do nothing different to the cards besides OCing them in the factory - get the regular model. It'll OC well enough anyway.

If the OC model is actually different in terms of the cooling or the quality of the chips - get it. I doubt this is the case though.

The GTX970 is 1178MHz boost and 7000MHz memory out of the box. My strix version is easily able to do ~1400MHz and 7700MHz just by changing a few settings in GPU Tweak.

I'd be surprised if you can't whack on similar percentages to a 1070.

That's not the problem here and yeah many games do use that much. The real problem here is that nvidia is ripping you off. They advertise something and then do a bait and switch.

In DX12 (the thing most games will use soon) the $400 1070 (7.5 of real GDRR5 vRAM) is only ~20% better than the $240 RX 480 (8GB of real GDRR5 vRAM).

Is spending about 2X as much really worth it if you only get 20% better performance?
