Why isn't it more common for websites to lay out content horizontally? Every website nowadays still lays things out to a fixed width and scrolls up and down, and now with wide monitors you end up with all this pointless unused space on the side. Pic related.
Why not instead format content to a height that matches the browser viewport and scroll from left to right? You could probably fit like 3x more stuff on the screen at once, including ads, especially on text-heavy websites. Why are we still designing websites for square monitors?

you can still have text read normally in a layout like that though. Picture how when you hold a newspaper open everything is organized into justified columns, and you turn the page to the right to continue reading. that same concept can easily be applied to webpages and make much more practical use of your screen.
