Weird. Ive owned a Kindle since early 2009. I had the 2, the 3, and the first gen paperwhite which I still use every day.

Never had a problem. Sounds like you got a defective unit. Luckily Amazon has pretty much the best customer support so they'll help you get it straightened out if you're not too autistic to call them.

Never connect to WiFi and just run everything through Calibre

I just bought a used Paperwhite 2 because all my books this semester are available from epub sites

I have not. I find it just as easy to convert epub to mobi. And I have no use other than reading for my kindle.
