Are standing desks a meme?

I'm using a makeshift standing desk with cardboard boxes and books to prop everything up, 2 days in and my feet are aching, can barely keep my legs straight and some weird flexion going on in my lower back, that can't be good.

Only good thing I've noticed so far is, it makes music WAY more enjoyable, being able to move my body to the beat, like a DJ set or something.

Are you wearing shoes? A good pair of running shoes will help with the pain in the feet.
It takes some time to get used to, but it's healthier.
Don't forget to move around and take breaks.

You need a soft surface to stand on, you only have half a standing setup as it.. stands..

Sports shoes are a start, but there are medium density mats available specifically for this purpose. Even a yoga mat or other firm-ish foam will help.
