>Reboot
>All my windows and extra desktops are laid out and restored to exactly the way they were before the reboot

Windows and Linux are so fucking far behind it's not even CLOSE. Holy SHIT.
>>
XFCE has the option to save the previous session
>>
>>58496989
so like... what are extra desktops for?
is that just a way to more efficiently hide your porn?
>>
i do agree that this is nice. idk why windows doesnt implement it, it's a big reason why i dont shut down my PC anymore. i just dont want to start "fresh"
>>
>>58497033
>>58497047
Windows doesn't have it full stop. Linux doesn't work anywhere near as well as macOS.

>>58497040
I put my dev stuff on another desktop.
>>
>>58497065
In what way doesn't it work as well?
I haven't used macOS enough to know about the session saving, but from what OP says, it sounds pretty much just like what XFCE does - remembers what windows were open and puts them back.

There's probably something I'm overlooking, but from what I know, they seem pretty similar.

You can enable window restore after reboot on Windows since XP

>>
Well you can make a linux or windows machine do that aswell. Or the simpler solution for non macs is to make a simple .txt document and save your links, if they are so important to you.
>>
>>58496989
If only there were some useful programs to restore in Linux
>>
>>58496989
Too bad it doesn't save the unsaved changes in any application
>>
>>58498558
It does actually. Saves in the background an extra copy every 5 minutes. So that you can browse your edits in the "Restore Versions" option.

Shithouse mac freezes up again for 10 mins straight, eventaully get bored and restart the machine. All the programs open back up when the desktop loads making it freeze up again.
Great feature.
>>
>>58498705
You can disable the option to restore the windows on bootup. It asks right before you click the shut down now button.
>>
>>58498509
Is that windowmaker? How usable is it?
>>
>>58498743
It was usable in 2012 or so when I took that picture, I'm not so sure about now.
>>
>>58496989
That's pretty neat. Still never buying a Mac though.
>>
I'm sure you can browse facebook really efficiently.
>>
>>58498314
Then what macos does is simply hibernate and turn on again. Such innovation
>>
>>58499231

Yeah, totally hibernation.
>>
>>58496989
KDE Plasma can do that as well. Fuck off for not knowing anything.

I wanted the multiple desktops feature on Windows after looking at Linux, and I got it.
I have never fucking used it.
It's worthless.

Also, I'm so done with Windows. I wanna move to BSD.

But, regardless, if I had that feature, I'd disable it. I fucking hate when it tries to remember all my stuff. I'll just run a couple things in scripts to open my programs.
I don't want it wasting writes on my SSD to save basically a hibernate file.
Fuck that gay shit.

Could say the same thing about ur little Dock shit over there.
"OH SO EASY! ALL MY PROGRAMS RIGHT THERE!"

Yeah, Dell offered me a dock, too. I never once used it, and I disabled it at startup right after I got the damn thing, because it doesn't work the way I want.

I store programs and folders as submenus in Start
>>
>>58496989
If I'm working with my PC I keep it on, if I'm done I shut it done, if I need to leave it I just close the lid and it goes to standby so I can recover the session in seconds if the battery is too low it automatically saves the session to the disk and everything works. I can't think of another possibility. You can't even understand the difference between a full shutdown and a hibernation, a function windows has had since I can't remember when? I think I even remapped my shutdown button to this thought I rarely use it.
>>
>>58499619
>But, regardless, if I had that feature, I'd disable it.
Guess what, you can. It asks you on shutdown if you want it to remember your shit.

>I don't want it wasting writes on my SSD to save basically a hibernate file.

Yes, that's called hibernation.

>tfw best os runs great on non-official hardware

MUH WALLED GARDEN
>>
>>58499760
Cool, now lemme also run your system without Cocoa, using like X with Lumina, and on hardware from like 8-15 different vendors in a custom build and you got yourself a deal!
(seriously, this crap is the MAIN reason I wouldn't buy a Mac. I don't want their shit hardware. DESU, if it wasn't for their hardware and incompatible DE, I actually had considered their OS. It IS still UNIX, after all, but by no means is it UNIX at heart... baka)
>>
>>58499815
>but by no means is it UNIX at heart
Explain further.
>>
>>58496989
Why would I care where the window opens up as long as it's visible when it does?
>>
>>58499869
Standards and Compatibility > cash inflow.

In other words, your MAIN goal should be to run on every conceivable device and run every conceivable program. You should have the side goal of making money doing that.

In other words, when new hardware comes out, your goal should be to have a BETA driver up in a week, and a Stable Release in a month.

Of course, that's hyperbole, but the main point is:
>This is our OS
>That is NOT our hardware
>We're selling you an OS
>We don't give a shit what hardware you use
>Here's everything you need to run it on that hardware
>Also, here's everything you need to run every program we had time to write emulation for
>Thank you, and come again in 3 years for the next Release and pay us $50 for that.

The UNIX spirit is One OS to Rule Them All. NOT One of Many OS's that are NOT Interoperable and on Hardware No One Wants
>>
>>58499779
Why not, like, just buy another monitor? So it's always open and visible. And isn't just a grouped minimize/maximize?
>>
>>58499959
But lemme make that post less autistic.
Because, sorry, but I'm a sperg

The UNIX spirit is:
This is the basis for an OS.
It runs on everything, and everything runs on it.
Humanity Standardized.
>>
>>58499987
>It runs on everything, and everything runs on it.
Not sure what OS quite does that, UNIX or other.

>>
>>58500098
No, but that's what UNIX is supposed to be. I tried to simplify it.

Mac does the opposite of this. Windows does the opposite even more.

If it's UNIX-compliant, it SHOULD be compatible with every other UNIX software, and it SHOULD have the widest feasible range of hardware and driver support.

This is the official UNIX Philosophy:
1. Small is beautiful.
2. Make each program do one thing well.
3. Build a prototype as soon as possible.
4. Choose portability over efficiency.
5. Store data in flat text files.
6. Use software leverage to your advantage.
7. Use shell scripts to increase leverage and portability.
8. Avoid captive user interfaces.
9. Make every program a filter.

I don't necessarily agree with 1. I believe more is better than less.
5 is questionable, but I think I'm looking at it from the wrong perspective.
And IDK what 6 means.

But, what IS important here are 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9.
Most specifically, I refer to 3, 4, and 8.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_philosophy
>>
>>58500188
And what the fuck do you think you're doing..?

Not even that guy, btw.

Unless you're saying that you can close a program, NOT turn off the OS, and then open it right back up to where it was.
In which case, that's most likely a waste of disk writes. Fuck that. How do you turn it off?
>>
>>58496989
Linux has this but yeah its very smooth on Mac I'll say that.

Though I have the option disabled because honestly I prefer a clean screen
