So /g/ explain to me why hard drives """fail"""?

How do they randomly just stop working, and why do they only last 3-4 years on average?
>>
>>58482687
>3-4 years average.

What's the power supply like where you are?

I still have a Quanum Fireball 3.2gig drive that I bought in September 1997. It's still going.
>>
In my experience, they last a lot longer than that

The last hard drive that failed for me was a 500GB WD ide drive, and that was back when they were still current
>>
Usually stress on the components weakens shit until it breaks. Also sudden jolts can cause the heads to crash.
>>
>>58482687
Everything that has a moving mechanical mechanism in it eventually wears down and breaks.

But still something is very wrong if your drives are lasting only 3-4 years. Even if they're in continual use they should have a lot more than that in them.
>>
>>58482687
Moving parts unlike a SSD. Eventually they just crap out and are prone to failure.

SMART is not guaranteed to predict failures.

A drive showing SMART errors is more likely to be failing, but drives can and do fail with no SMART errors, and drives showing SMART errors are not guaranteed to fail. Put your stock in backups and redundancy, not in SMART.
>>
>>58483491
A decades old harddrive would be useless today even if it still worked, since it would be much too small.

>>58483509
>dies in a week
According to some study Google did drives either fail really quickly, or they last a long time.
>>
>>58483547
it was some "Certified Repaired" drive with a different S/N that they mailed me back, it was my fault that I expected much from it I guess.
>>
>>58482733
This.

The only drive ive had fail in 20+ years is one where i kicked my computer when it was writing. Theres a good reason to not have a computer on the floor.
>>
>>58483400

>>
>>58482733
Mains power isn't so much the problem as the quality of your PSU. A good PSU will feed the drive clean power, even from dirty mains. A bad PSU will feed the drive crappy power, even from clean mains.
>>
That 3-4 year figure is under server-style loads where the disk is almost always in use, constantly reading/writing.

Normal consumer use should make a standard HDD last way longer than 3-4 years.
>>
>>58483693

>>58483729
even then server HDDs tend to be replaced on a timeline instead of run into the ground. A 3-5yo enterprise drive probably has years of life left in it even if its been worked hard, but most enterprises will replace it at that age both out of caution and to get more capacity, better performance, and higher power efficiency. Hell, you can work consumer drives that hard too. They're a bit more likely to fail, but not terribly so. Some enterprises do that because the drives are so much cheaper that it saves money, even though you have to replace a few more of them.

Hard drives should last a long time if they haven't fucked up in the first few months. I had one from 2008-2015 as the main OS drive with no problems. Only shelved it because I fell for the SSD meme.

I must be the luckiest person in the world. I had hardrive fail around me all the time, except the ones I own.

I still have the original WD 74GB Raptors that I had running in RAID0 as my boot drive for Windows XP last 7 years with 95% uptime, and they are still good. Pulled that PC out recently, and dropped Windows 7 on it. Works great.

I currently have a RAID0 consisting of 4x WD 2TB Greens that are at least 6 years old, this is my NAS, it has 99% uptime. Not a single failure.

Of course a few years ago before SSDs came down in price I bought a 600GB Raptor that failed after 2 months. That's about it, that's the only failure I ever had.

Except you took these numbers out of ass.
If you treat HDDs properly (provide stable power, mounting and cooling, minimize vibrations, properly configure HDD - APM, AAM, spindown period, load/unload cycles with wdidle) they'll be serving you well for a long, long time

CrystalDiskMark, and therefore by extension CrystalDiskInfo too, are professional software used by Toshiba.

The only HDDs I can confim die for no good reason are modern 2.5'' drivers, both seagate and WD, inside laptops with average internal temps that never got any shocks.

I also have a 20+ yo 2.5'' which had some sticktion issues, easily solved by moving it around a bit before starting.

id never buy a laptop, id use my phone

you can build a G4400 PC for $200 and do everything normal PC users need to do

theres zero incentive to buy a SSD except for gaymers who are literally once again shitting money to compensate for shitty game design

intel themselves have stopped increasing processing power over the last 5 years

and Nvidia are relying on devs bottlenecking older GPUs to force you to keep buying new GPUs with DX?? version and by games being constantly unoptimized you have to keep over killing GPU resources

up til this last year 2 Gigs of ram was all you needed, then Forza 3 and Gears happened and suddenly everyone had to upgrade just to barely run games smoothly at the lowest settings

All my drives have lasted for all of the time I have needed to use them, I retire perfectly good but aged drives.

My first HD lasted about 6 years before I upgraded it, retiring a perfectly good drive. The current one is almost 7 years old.

99% of their issues are power interuptions which cause bad sectors and then they're told they need to upgrade their entire PC rather than buy a $10 HDD

its cheaper to build a 1150 build than replace any 775 piece outside of a CPU

You mean the G4560, the first Pentium with HT

SSD's aren't a meme and most gamers store almost all their games on HDD's anyway because they have minimal impact on loading times, SSD's are used for the Operating system and desktop applications. There's a damn good reason why people always recommend an SSD as the most important upgrade.

True, still rocking a 3570K with no reason to upgrade. Hopefully AMD will get them going again.

Who said you have to run a game maxed out? FO4 God rays and TW3 hairworks are notorious for it, but you can just turn them off for little visual difference. You could just buy AMD FineWine technology too.

Yeah, that opportunity is long since gone. But their 4TB are actually pretty good with only 2% annual failure rate out of a few thousand they sell. But the damage is done and this will cast them in a bad light for years on because of the 3TB drives failing around 47% in 2012 and 2013.
>>
>>58490587

try $75.00

the 4400 is already the same speed as every other CPU on 1151

and the multithreaded performance vs the 6100 is negligable, the hyperthreading makes no difference except for fooling games into thinking you have 4 cores

and at that price point its not logical to buy over the i6-6100

the 4400 is 50

also theres zero real world stats on either cpuworld or cpu users benchmark to comare the 2

it also would be not even listed on a price to performance list which the 4400 is near the top with the 3900 at the best which is only $5-10 cheaper but only 80% relative speed so might as well just get the 4400 to run any particular application as fast as every other CPU
