What the fuck is wrong with webdev?
>>
>>58478055
it's a field of art majors rather than CS majors.
>>
It's a clusterfuck of frameworks on top of frameworks cobbled together by people who are trying to make JavaScript less shitty. An impossible goal.
>>
>>58478164
This is because the industry keeps recreating languages and APIs. This cycle is on steroids when it comes to webdev.

I don't know what the fucking issue is, but everyone thinks that some new language or framework/API is going to revolutionize productivity. But a new foundation means rebuilding the entire house. So maybe you get a 5% productivity gain using Python instead of C++. But you also lose access to hundreds of thousands of man hours worth of code across the industry. You'll never make that up. Any productivity gains will always be swallowed up by that.

I feel like everything at the level of languages/frameworks has been a meme since about 2000. We're not actually going any where, we're just splintering developers into separate groups. People develop wide knowledge (multiple languages, frameworks, APIs) but not deep knowledge (most efficient way to perform a task).

It's really rather discouraging.
>>
>>58478055
well, it is cross platform though and it ships with a broser in the project.
>>
>>58478665
This so much.
"Hiring developers with experience in languages X,Y and frameworks F,G and H. Proficiency in Z also encouraged"
>>
Webdev is fine once you realize that 90% of frameworks are the software equivalent of C# and nobody actually uses them. It's like "What's wrong with programming?? So many languages!"
Just learn React and Angular and you can get any job
>>
>>58478055
how large is the distributable after you build it?
>>
there's nothing wrong with webdev, you just suffer from autism.

>>58478125
it's not their fault that javascript is the only option available.
>>
>>58478764
>only option available

not for long, thank god
>>
>>58478731
you don't build java, it's interpreted
>>
>>58479014
what did he mean by this?
>>
>>58479818
It's JavaScript. Also, JavaScript is commonly transpiled, bundled and minified. There is a huge difference between the development and the production size of most JavaScript applications.
>>
>>58479818
are you on drugs? java is compiled but also has nothing to do with Aurelia, a js framework.

js is interpreted but you normally run something like grunt build and get minified uglified files to serve from the server. they are normally much smaller.
>>
>>58478665
It's more like 50-70% productivity gain from going C++ to python under the assumption that you do not need the performance and the program is small. If the program is large then you actually end up losing around 10-20% productivity depending on scope.
