They just didn't have enough resource to continue developing their own rendering engine.

Opera as a company was bleeding money.

They really had no choice but to switch to WebKit/Blink.

I tried to remain objective while watching that video. I really did. But I just couldn't shake the notion that this thing was some kind of fake commercial from SNL, or maybe from TheOnion, since it seemed semi-tech-savvy.

But as a software developer, I have to say that I don't trust their concept at all. It seems all style over substance, where style is seizing control of behavior from the user and substance is a side effect at best.

We need a fast browser that is lightweight on the system, has a qualitative rather than quantitative selection of extensions, doesn't have bloated featured and isn't botnet. Firefox barely fills the botnet requirement, it fails the rest.

It's very simple, I think every browser nowadays suffers from oversimplification, and FireFox is no exception.
It's also the most lightweight. Currently having 4 windows and about 100 tabs, FireFox x64 uses 1,6GB, on a system with 32GB available. I keep multiprcess disabled myself, though it should not bump the usage by much from my experience.

Try opening 20 tabs or so on every browser, see which one uses less resources. To me Chromium it's impossible to use. I have 8 extensions installed, though all are small things besides uB0 and DTA. Even with no tabs open, you still get the least amount of RAM used with FireFox. Chrome uses over 300, and I have only one extension.

>>
>>58467333
If you want to compare two things, make sure they are as identical as possible.
What you are doing is a "real life" test where you want to compare a more realistic scenario, thus accepting some variance.
I have plugins that doesn't change increase memory usage and some that does.
Comparing the number of plugins and the number of tabs is meaningless in itself.
Given you would use one or the other, you should have the same plugins (or at least plugins that provide the same functionality) and the same websites.
There is a great variance between threads on 4chan and wether you load thumbnails or full images.
>>
>>58467425
In firefox I just opened the thread, I didn't open any thumbnails. I'll accept your point about plugins, but that just makes firefox seem even slower.

The fact is, firefox had less tabs than chrome, still used more memory.
>>
>>58466477
> I hate this adults trying to "get in touch with their inner child" bullshit,

Especially when all we need is a stable, fast, flexible, secure browser that manages memory well. That's a job for adult men who have the ability to focus and solve problems. I don't want them acting like children while they're doing it.

If the marketing idiots want to go over to McDonald's and play in the playpen to get in touch with their inner child, then fine. But they have absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the resulting browser -- all they're doing is just slapping a name on it and writing a jingle for the promotional video and pushing it out on social media -- tasks that actually are within the skill set of a child.

So now leftism is going into the web browser market. It has failed on the political ground, but it will win in the truly democratic mighty Internet.

It literally makes me gonna figuratively puke my guts out. This world is going down the suers in an unstoppable pace. I do not know if any one of you remember the Donnie Brasco movie. I think, that this film was very foretelling. There was a "Lefty" character, who was very righteous but he was blind. He let an enemy to enter the famiglia. And in the end he was dead, and the whole family was dead too.

That is literally the purpose of beta versions. It's probably better now.

What browser features does /g/ actually want, which are not currently provided by existing browsers? In all my time on the Internet, the only additions I have ever liked have been private browsing and tabbed browsing. Everything else just feels like unnecessary bloating. Opera 12 was the last Opera. Everything after that is garbage.

Thank goodness the original devs came out with Vivaldi, I'd still be using Opera 12 if not for them.

As long as the browser uses V8 Idgaf, but I don't know the first thing about Opera. The company I work at only support IE/Edge, Chrome, and Safari

Firefox is improving on the speed front
You just have to use multiple windows if you have a lot of tabs
>>
>>58475473
>Vivaldi
Mah nigga. I thank god every day for the Ethiopian intern who showed me that browser. It's still a little jank (only recently got the ability to drag tabs out into their own windows without refreshing the page), but since they're clearly making improvements to the browser, it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.
>>
god I hate any browser which is """fluidly""" designed.
when i use a browser, I want something that is nondescript, simple, and stationary. I dont want multi-tab drag-and-drop cutesy web 6.9 bullshit.

Google does the same phony optics, the vast majority of people who work on Chrome (note, not Chromium) are women including the all female security team. Chrome is essentially just Chromium with a bunch of crammed in binaries for spying oh i mean 'analytics'.

The Google funded employees who make Chromium are generally male. It's like all of silicon valley has a competition to see how many women they can give token jobs to pretend they are 'diverse'

It was pronounced like the music genre. This is why the Vivaldi guys called their new browser Vivaldi and the engine of Opera was called Presto which also is music jargon for fast. But as you've noticed women are the worst and stupid, and this is why that slut thinks it's pronounced like a nigger tv character.

I keep it installed in the event it finally gits gud, but right now I click reply and it won't even load the captchas. Vivaldi's not perfect and O12 is getting old, but I can still post here just fine with either.
>>
>>58481084
Scratch that. Refreshing the page no only allows the captcha to load, but also fixed the iframe ad on the bottom since I don't bother to load extensions. Not sure if this is a browser issue or hiroshijew's server being slow.

Seriously its a fucking chrome skin.
Tab bar is far to fucking large, why do I need these massive and ugly bubbles. I wouldn't mind the tab style if it was about the size of the menu bar on the left hand side of the screen. address bar, could you at least make it fade out when I am not fucking typing, why did it get so much screen real estate?
