I finally decided to sit down and learn Arch instead of bitching that nothing "just werks" and it has quickly became my favorite distro. The question is what DE do you think compliments Arch the most?
>>
>>58460066
My DE compliments it best. It's all about you in Arch, that's why it's good.
>>
>>58460090
I never installed it because of how the retards on this board made it sound so complicated and it's been such a smooth ride for me. My only problem was compiling and installing from AUR but now that I have that everything is great.
>>
openbox+
tint2 or lemonbar

make build install....? who is that hard for
>>
>>58460066
no DE
i3+gaps

Gnome flashback

Installation is very logical actually. Create partitions, install the base. Setting up is a bit problematic because nothing comes with initial configurations (not entirely true). However bear with it for a while and once you realize most programs use pretty much the same syntax you'll get used to it.

Don't depend on AUR that much.

Anyway Arch is good and pretty nice distro to shape for your own interests.

I use gnome 3 and it's great. it's obviously a hate it or love it DE but it does have 'just works' for many dozens of features
>>
>>58460066
Xfce4 or xde..personally i prefer a simple windows manager like awesome or spectrum..

cinnamon just werks for me

I actually had Austism moment I have had to install Arch twice and the first time I had installed devel but I hadn't the second so when I tried to compile I couldn't and since I had remembered installing devel I didn't know what was happening.
>>
Here's the thing about arch. It works just fine 95% of the time, but rarely you will upgrade a package that fucks over many other things and then you'll have to spend time figuring out how to fix it.

It's a good distro for hobbyists, but I wouldn't recommend it for a family computer or someone that needs their pc to just work all the time.

As for what DE is the most arch like, I would say none. If you really want to play into the arch stereotypes (let's be honest everyone does, including me), then get a wm like awesome or i3.
These are tiling but also have floating modes (awesome does at least, not sure about i3 but I'm also fairly confident it does).
>>
>>58460066
GNOME 3

Also, i3 or i3 gaps
>>
>>58462300
>hobbyists

lol what the fuck even is that? "Oh yeah man I have a hobby, it's using Arch Linux"

Nigga you dumb, shit just werks, been using it for a whole year with no problem. In that same amount of time I've had more problems with wangblows. Hell I've had more problems with Ubuntu.
>>
>>58462412
are you literally retarded?
It's a fun distro for people who enjoy tinkering and tweaking their systems.

I also never fucking compared it to any other os, so I have no idea why you're bringing up ubuntu or windows.
And if you've never had an issue during an update that is because you either have never used a package that has fucked up, or you haven't been using the distro long enough.
>>
>>58460066
Don't use Arch.
We have daily ~ 5 fags in /fglt/ with a broken system, just because people updated.

Arch is a nice toy for a VM and tingering, but nothing if you're serious about your OS.
>>
>>58460282
gaps is a meme. it has no utility other than ricing and posting on /r/unixporn
>>
>>58462611
Arch has been my daily driver for 2 years, and I have never had a system-breaking problem. I use the testing repos too.
>>
GNOME
it just works, seriously... as long as you can read the wiki. you literally don't need anything else as it pulls in everything else you would need.

gdm + gnome
even my girlfriend can figure out how it works. true story
>>
>>58460066
xfce, sucks that the defaults are garbage
>>
Why not use FreeDOS? FreeDOS is less bloated than Linux.
>>
>>58462300
Yeah, I've ran into that shit before. I try to putt off updates if I have anything important to do, like work.
>>
>>58460066
im liking KDE plasma
>>
>>58460066
>DE
Cinnamon.

Rest of the DEs are garbage (GNOME for example), look ugly (XFCE) and just plain autistic (i3).
>>
>>58460066
KDE Plasma.

Someone who's always used a package manager and never had to build from source before. I remember it being a little confusing when I first started.

We were all new once, quit being a dick.

don't use a de, just get a nice wm like awesome or i3 if awesome is too much for you.

you will learn more and have the right build for you if you only get things for specific purposes and don't resort to what other people think you need.

plus you will make the minimalist crowd happy if thats your thing.
