Also, speaking from experience here, what you said isn't exactly true. I had a "gaming" laptop for a while before I knew better and it was a gargantuan monstrosity. Once you start putting in dual NVIDIA cards with SLI and a 17" screen, the thing starts to weigh 20 lbs and becomes so bulky and huge it's hardly transportable. Despite all that, cooling still is an issue. Airflow will never be as good as in a desktop. I was overheating constantly under high load, and even just doing basic tasks the fans would still be pretty loud and the laptop would be warm.

I find it uncomfortable being longer on a notebook. I have just more space on the desk. Moving the chair and my position on it and moving the keyboard how I want is comfier. Also the screen is bigger, typing is easier, more place for my mouse etc.
My PC has also much more power. But for being mobile is my Thinkpad an adequate replacement.

Because I could have a GTX 1060, Skylake i5 (a real one, not a pruned mobile chip), and 8GB of RAM for half the price on a desktop as those specs would cost on a laptop. Since I don't need to perform those tasks on the go, it makes no sense to put that power into a more expensive, portable form factor.

Desktop systems also run cooler, quieter, faster and I don't need to worry about battery health. All of those lead to the hardware lasting longer, saving additional money – and even more is saved when an upgrade is required. You buy a new laptop, I merely upgrade parts as needed. This saves huge amounts of money.

So unless you're a businessman or engineer who travels a lot and needs heavy computing on the go, a desktop is the better choice. Get a netbook or a nice large smartphone.

I have both a nice desktop and a good Thinkpad workstation laptop, but I regret spending more on the laptop and lugging around the weight when most of my mobile computing could be done on a netbook.

Thunderbolt isn't bad per se. It's just limited in compatibility compared to what USB has and USB-C will have, while being slower than Gen 2 C.

Harder/impossible to repair, modify, and upgrade.
Fewer options overall, especially for things like expansion cards, connectivity, and storage (my desktop has 6 hard drives - can't do that on a laptop).
You're at the mercy of the manufacturer and have to pay for whatever the manufacturer thinks you need.
Expensive if you want decent performance.
Also, I've yet to see any laptop that has high performance parts but is inaudible under load, and if there was one, it would be so thick and heavy that it would defeat the purpose of getting a laptop anyway. Sure, most desktops aren't silent either, but they are almost always quieter, and it is at least possible to set one up to be silent if you choose the right parts.
