I had the same thing happen to a Sandisk usb stick.

Burnt out my usb port, and lost me a weeks worth of data.

Looks like it will still work just fine, really.
What happened is that during the transfer, the microSD heated up to crazy amounts (no thermal regulation) and caused the problems.

Sandisk Micro SDs are counterfeited like fuck though. He could've easily gotten a fake, as could have you. Every Sandisk SD i've bought (from trusted retailers) has worked excellently.
