>get brand new laptop
>load ubuntu onto flash drive
>choose to wipe drive and make it the only OS
>"installation has completed successfully and requires a restart to finish"
>restarts and boots back into USB stick instead of off of hard drive
>computer can no longer see hard drive, even in bios

This redpill you guys convinced me to take is making me feel funny, /g/
>>
>>58439993
>he ACTUALLY fell for the linux meme

only autismos do that shit

windows has everything you need from gaymen to word processing to rendering
>>
>>58439993
>restarts and boots back into USB stick instead of off of hard drive
Well, if you had the boot priority set to boot from USB in the first place and you didn't remove the drive before restarting, that's to be expected.
>computer can no longer see hard drive, even in bios
Either you're retarded or the drive has failed (unlikely)
>>
So what happens if you boot without the USB stick in
>>
>>58440073
Didn't want to risk pulling out the stick without ejecting first. Can assure you that the hard drive no longer appears in bios
>>58440094
Booting off USB works fine, but now when I try installing again it gives me all kinds of weird "could not write" and "corrupted hdvrkaicycv" messages and the whole thing shuts down

B-but Linux is still god-tier right?
>>
I think it may have something to do with me checking the "overwrite empty space" and "encrypt disk" boxes when installing the first time, then after restarting it never properly finished
>>
>>58440184
Have you tried booting without the USB stick? If the machine is off you don't have to eject, silly.

You should definitely try to format the hard drive and install again.

Don't check those this time if you think that's what caused it
>>
>>58440168
how retarded must you be to think you HAVE to eject a drive before removing it.

OKAY FOURTH TRY'S THE CHARM

USB STICK IS STILL IN COMPUTER, BOOT ORDER IS SET TO FAVOR USB STICK

CANNOT EJECT FLASH DRIVE

I WILL LITERALLY NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL SOMEONE TELLS ME WHAT TO DO THIS SCHOOLBUS IS TEETERING ON THE EDGE AND ITS MY ONLY MODE OF TRANSPORT
>>
>>58440325
Just take out the USB stick when the machine shuts off to restart

You only need to eject to make sure nothings being written to it, rebooting does not write anything to the stick

>>

Take out the usb drive retard
>>
>>58440391
Your HDD is defective. Send laptop back under warranty claim. Get it replaced or ask for another laptop in exchange.
>>
>>58440325

Open a terminal.

(alt-ctrl f-1 or ctrl -f1)

Login as root

bash#> sync ; sync (yes, do it twice)

yank usb drive immediately.

power-cycle machine and boot from hard drive.

What sync does: it flushes cache and forces write to disk.

But wait, there's more: Since the computer only /read/ from the USB drive and didn't write to it (which is normal for installing) you don't have to sync the drives.

Just power cycle the machine and yank usb drive before it goes to the next boot.

>>58440391
What does it show when you turn it on?

>I took out the stick and asked the OS on the stick to shut it off
This is purposeful retardation and misinterpretation.
>>
>>58439993
It might have converted your HDD to GPT, and your system might not be able to handle it (happened to me). You can just reformat it with gparted from a live cd.
>>
>>58440448
It is the rite of passage. First time I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04, I accidentally my whole Windows partition losing 5 years of data and music.

I learned my lesson to never format /dev/sda and take out USB before installing grub because Ubuntu is so stupid it installs grub on USB leaving you with a blank screen on reboot.
>>
>>58439993

enable or disable legacy mode or "CSM" in the BIOS
>>
I just ordered a new hdd for $60

Can't believe I fell for this fucking penguin meme bring on the botnet
>>
>>58440449
(you)
>>
How can OP be so retarded, I bet you are a sub 80 IQ ape.
>>
>>58440015
It also has all the botnet you could ever need.
>>
>>58440552
This is the solution for the black screen you got OP been there done that

I had to reset my cmos, enable csm and everything started working again

Blame Microsoft and """secure boot""" (read: only allow windows boot) for all this bullshit btw
>>
>>58440618
1) Plug your fucking usb into the usb port on your computer
2) Boot from the usb
3) In the installer, select "try ubunty"
4) In the live OS, run gparted (run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gparted in case it's not there by default
5) Select your internal hard disk, then go to device -> create new partition table
6) Make a new partition table (you might have to press the green checkmark for it to actually do it afterwards)
Your HDD should be usable now, so there's only one step remaining
7) Kill yourself
>>
>>58440449
(you)
>>
>>58440782
Also you should make sure the type of the new partition table is MSDOS in step 6.
>>
>>58439993
Thank KEK you get to stay on Windows.
Fuck freetards trying to get these kinds of mongoloids to become part of the userbase.
