I don't know about you but despite being more bloated, websites of today load faster for me than websites did in the early 2000s.

Pretty sure even mobile optimized sites are larger than websites of yore.

Just disable javascript and see for yourself how much of the web is instantly responsive, some websites won't load but you can install something like QuickJava to enable JS only when you really need to, and disable it the rest of the time for a snappy experience.
There's also other plugins to make some websites that require JS work without JS, like HTML5 Video Everywhere for youtube and some others video websites.

The size of webpages isn't necessarily why they take long to load. If you have sufficient bandwidth you can load a 3mb webpage in a second, but it often still takes significantly longer than that. Why? Install noscript and take a look at all the trackers you're also loading. Thats tons of HTTP ports being opened, tons of address look ups. Thats whats making your web experience seem like its as slow as ever.
