I use openshot. It's very simple but does a decent job

This.
As a linuxfag myself I still can't deny that there is absolutely no good video editing software for it.
blender
do not ever try openshot, kdenlive or the like, they have the inherent feature of crashing constantly

Came here to post this
Lightworks looks pretty nice, but but the Pro version is $500

Clearly you live under a stone.

For the most part I don't do much editing. But for cropping, trimming, and transcoding I use ffmpeg.
Years ago I used Openshot. I thought it was great. But I have heard that some folks hate it now...not sure why. If you need a Windows Movie Maker clone then Openshot might be your best bet (assuming it hasn't gone to complete shit). For more advanced stuff, I don't know.

>paying to make Counter-Strike montages

First answer is the best. Who would've thought?
I've only used openshot and it's literally awful. you have to save every 30 seconds for the inevitable crash every 2-3 minutes. Exporting a video is hell knowing 9/10 times it'll crash before it's done.

OpenShot for beginners, Cinelerra-cv for industrial strong editing, Kdenlive for most plebs.
