Just got a used Thinkpad off eBay and it came with Windows 10 pro. This is going to be my secondary computer and I want to completely wipe Windows and put Linux on it but not lose the Windows 10 pro key/license as it's valuable and could be used later.

Is there any way to keep the license for a future install in the same (or other) computer?

The motherboard ID is registered with Microsoft, it will activate itself when you reinstall

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Check your properties on the new Control Panel.
If Digital License- you don't need to do anything
If product key- you need to obtain the key
If Organization's activation service- the seller pirated it

What does this do? (NOT OP)

I pirated windows 7 to get the free windows 10 upgrade a while back.

If I used this program can I use the windows 10 code it finds on a new PC im building?

Yes, if you use a Microsoft account.

Correction/Clarification: You need to use MS account on the old build, and then install W10 on the new build and use that MS account. No product key is involved

oops wrong tag

I see, hmm. I'll try to figure it out.

It's likely an OEM key, meaning you won't be able to activate it on a new motherboard.
Worth a try though.

I'm OP.
I have one microsoft account linked to 2 devices (one Pro, one Home). What would happen in this case?

Then either will work provided the old system is no longer in use.
Btw, after an immediate install the new system is not activated automatically, you need to run the troubleshooter in the new control panel activation settings and choose "I changed hardware on this device recently".

Nope.
