i recently got a smart phone that i use occasionally to access two of my gmail accounts. yesterday, i tried to log into that account from my home desktop computer and gmail wouldn't allow me without authenticating with my phone that i'm trying to log into the account.
what fucking bullshit is this? i never turned on 2FA. there was absolutely no way to bypass this either. my only options were to authenticate with my phone or try logging into a different account.

it wasn't a sms. it was a pop up on my phone as soon as i unlocked it with the only choices being yes or no, and the question being whether i'm trying to login to my gmail account from a different device.
i accidentally hit no the first time since i expected a sms and thought it was some update notification at first.

Adding a phone number when registering a gmail is completely optional. You should have avoided connecting your phone's number to accounts. Nothing left to do now but authenticate.

the account in question is from 2004 and i got the phone in 2016. previously, i have never used any phone to access that account.
