Hey /g/, how does one root a phone?
I've went through forums and tried it out myself but ended up bricking my phone.

I have the same phone. I got it for free and managed to brick it a few times myself, but it's now back on stock 5.1.1 and sitting in my desk drawer. I have the AT&T US version. The AT&T and Verizon US models have an anti-root technology called Samsung KNOX, which operates on a root of trust. So any unsigned code running as root will trigger KNOX and the phone will refuse to boot. You can restore to a stock firmware (available on XDA) to unbrick it. The AT&T models are basically unrootable, but there is an engineering kernel you can try out, but the root method for that is tethered, meaning when you reboot you lose root. In my opinion, it's not worth it. The only reason why I haven't sold mine is because I plan on doing further testing to see if I can get root on it. But if you're not a developer, just get another phone. It could be years before any progress is made, or it could be never.

Oh, and I forget to mention that the warranty is totally void now, and Samsung pay will probably stop working.
