This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and autism that is required to make a fine watch.

So, one bad thing about vintage watches is that it can be very hard to find answers to questions.

Like, does a Seiko LM Special 5206-6120 use the same size dial as a 5206-6130? Probably no one out there has both and so no one knows.

Only way to find out is to buy a 5206-6130 for the case and see if it fits. Which sucks because the 5206-6130 is the most "Grammar of Design" shaped case out of the LM Special line.

Did I make a good choice with this? I like it more than the black SNK809.

Also, how hard is it to replace the hardlex crystal with a sapphire one? Would a domed crystal look good on it?
I found a seller on ebay that sells them for like 20$.

I'd hardly say that.
A 24 year old shows up on your door (Again) and presents you with a pocketwatch he made with his own hands, something Daniels himself didn't do until well into his 40's. I believe Daniels was more than pleased to take Roger on, so that he could teach Roger everything he knew. Daniel's goal with every watch he made, was to do something new, something to improve the keeping of time, and I think he knew the only way he could continue to do that, was to teach Roger.
>>
>>58374850

>>
>>58374994
The first time. Yes. By his own accounts even Roger knew the first watch he made was terrible. He was sent away by Daniels, told to do better. And he did. At the time of bringing the first piece, Roger was 22 I believe.

people with newly found wealth are likely to spend it on frivolous things, they aren't used to having that sort of disposable income

those who are already financially stable and adjusted to a lifestyle with more income will either continue perpetuating the cycle of blowing their money, or will eventually realize the stupidity in making poor/rash decisions
>>
>>58374930
>>58375003
Let me correct myself, it isn't an aftermarket dial after all.

Though the history behind it is kind of odd/hard to assemble. It's a commemorative dial ordered by Aeroflot, likely to commemorate their new trans-polar routes.

Recently began my foray into non-shitty watch buying. Got this SKX off ebay for a decent price with a murphy bezel and khaki nato strap. Bought a new pepsi insert along with some new adhesives and o-rings to spruce it up a little. Also have a Borealis Isofrane style strap on the way thanks to some anon's recommendation.

Side note: Anybody have any opinions/experience with the Seiko Sea Lion? Looking at picking one up soon if I can find a good deal.

I guess we'll never know why he took Roger on beyond what we may assume to be his thoughts at the time.

>>
>>58376427

I'd you have any arguments to make on the substance, please feel free to make them directly rather than engaging in appeals to authority and wholly unsupported meta-insinuations.

1) Plastics have worse coefficients of friction against themselves than ruby on diamond or ruby on steel.

2) Plastics have much MUCH lower wear resistance than rubies.

3) Plastics have much MUCH less resistance to plastic deformation than synthetic rubies

4) As a result, plastics are massively inferior to synthetic ruby and steel for use in an escape wheel and pallet fork, since minimal friction, maximum wear resistance and minimal plastic deformation are all key design imperatives for those parts.

Yep that's true. And if that matters to you it will fit with any clothes you wear.
>>
>>58377631
This is right watch given your criteria. It is universally recommended as the sub$-100 starter mechanical.
>>
>>58377631
Pretty much the ultimate entry-level mechanical watch. Well made, decent movement, from a good company. And it even has a display caseback.
It's a small watch, which could be the one downside. I really like the size myself.
>>
>>58377151
>I'd you have any arguments to make on the substance, please feel free to make them directly rather than engaging in appeals to authority and wholly unsupported meta-insinuations.
Please make another attempt of reading what I wrote. I replied to a direct question. You have not. And appealing to authority on 4chan is just bizarre, hard to see how you managed to think that.

Anyway, what I learned back in university was that wear is a question of both materials and as a rule of thumb you want to avoid two material with the same hardness. Teflon is soft but when used with steel can be remarkably durable. There is also the issue of surface structures on the microscopic level which can be overcome if the second material will be elastically deformable on the same scale.

Here is a little about teflon and nylon: http://info.craftechind.com/blog/bid/259158/Top-5-Materials-for-Plastic-Bearings-Used-on-Metal-Surfaces

As I mentioned earlier I only learned a little about this, tribology was not part of my PhD studies, so if you are an expert in this I'd like to hear more.
>>
>>58377570
Of the two I'd get the blue one, personally.
>>
>>58377747

The problem with Teflon in that type of application is, first of all, wear resistance. PTFE has low wear resistance and very low hardness even compared to many other plastics, meaning it will flex too much and wear too much to be used in an escape wheel or pallet.

Steel and rubies in this application are known to be able to last indefinitely as long as they are maintained.

>watch greatly over priced because this little known lie.
>even if moon landing was "real" there are several different products that made it to the moon that don't charge a premium for it
>no MOTM fire alarms
>no MOTM Tang
>All instrument panel clocks and time-keeping mechanisms in the spacecraft on those missions were Bulova Accutrons with tuning fork movement which played a more important role than the wrist watches worn by astronauts.
>no price premium on bulova watches.

Speedmasters are the most over hyped jewish schemes in the watch world.

One of the reasons I don't often buy watches online is because I like to wear my watches and sometimes I'm not sure how they'll feel on my wrist.

As long as I keep both the 5206-6060 and 5206-6120, which I am probably going to do, I don't see anything wrong with swapping the blue dial into the other case for my own personal use.

I could always switch them back. I have a sapphire crystal in my 52 KS Special but I have a NOS Seiko crystal for it in storage as well so I can restore it to original condition if I ever want to sell it. Personally I don't see anything wrong with that.

I have yet to figure out how to produce the rounded edges. I know how it's done and how things are constructed, but I'm too lazy to build a jig for it. Plus my stitching on a machine isn't too great. And I don't really know what to line it with to make it a little more sturdy.

Looks very classy with a black dialed watch, and the suede looks to be good quality. Only downside is the width being a hair too small, but as a handmade piece it looks quite nice.

Well you can get bubbles in regular paint easily by accident so I imagine you can also do it fairly easily if you try to, but filling it with tritium instead of air. If you look at old tritium paint it looks almost spongey so it I'm going to go out on a limb and say there are little micro-bubbles of tritium in the phosphorescent paint that keeps it contained and allows it to glow.

This is completely guessing on my part though.

Chronometer certification: During the early 1960s Seiko displayed the 'Chronometer' name on selected, precision watches which had passed the in-house Seiko chronometer standard testing, the equivalent of the BO (Basel Observatory) Chronometer standard, but stopped displaying the ‘Chronometer’ designation in 1966 due to the lack of independent CICC (Commission Internationale des Controles Chronometriques) Certification facilities in Japan. When the CICC-recognized JCA (Japan Chronometer Association) was established in 1968 in Japan, a few movements designated "Chronometer Officially Certified" (of which this KS caliber 5626 is one) appeared. From various sources, it appears that the non-chronometer 5626 was "A" accuracy graded with a mean daily rate of -6 to +9 secs/day, while the "officially certified" 5626 chronometer may have been manufactured to the entry-level Grand Seiko "AA" standard of -3 to +5 secs/day, or to the pre-1973 COSC standard of -1 to +10secs/day .

Does the quick-set for the date still work on that 5625? If it does, I strongly recommend you sell the watch before it inevitably fails.

Suwa produced 56xx movements should be avoided except for time only variants due to a plastic gear in the quick-set mechanics that shrinks and cracks due to age.

Also note that even after Seiko stopped indicating chronometer certification on their dials Daini Seikosha continued to produce more finely regulated than normal variants of the 52xx under the King Seiko "Special" name so as not to not undermine Grand Seiko brand positioning at the time.

What kind of mech bracelet do you have on the Cocktail Time and the KS?

If you really like the KS, Daini Seikosha produced an almost identic model using the 52xx caliber that isn't subject to the quick-set issues the Suwa produced 56xx is.
>>
>>58389501
Staib on the Cocktail time. The KS is weird, it says it's a Waltham, made in the USA. Never seen another like it. Love the wave pattern. S'why I'm hesitant to part with the watch.

Grand Seiko was supposed to be above King Seiko, but there was some resentment of this inside Seiko.

You see, in 1959 Seiko split its watchmaking into two competing divisions that did not share movements: Suwa Seikosha and Daini Seikosha.

Grand Seiko was developed by Suwa and King Seiko by Daini, and we're originally competitors. By the 1970s Seiko management had decided to make the GS name the top brand and so Daini was not allowed to advertise KS watches adjusted to GS tolerances or as Chronometers. So, Daini just started marking their stealth GS competitors as King Seiko "Special" without specifying what that meant.

In reality the KS Specials were adjusted more finely than the Officially Certified Chronometers had been, in particular because the 1975 King Seiko Specials were the last high end mechanicals Daini Seikosha would produce before all the high end models were transitioned to quartz.

protip: buy something which retains the value you purchased it for.

It is, in my view, a mistake to purchase within a constrained budget, when there are watches in the $150-200 range which are currently holding their value.

If you want a Seiko 5, and you're genuinely someone of little means, buy a second-hand one with some scratches, and beat the seller down in price. Do not buy a new one. Snipe on ebay auctions, etc.

With the money you saved, buy a dremel and a polishing kit. Commonly-available polishing compounds work for both watch crystals and cases, they're also cheap.

Voila, you now have a nice watch, and the means to turn crappy-looking watches into new-looking ones.
