what's the difference between vi and vim?
i was on a fresh ubuntu installation and ran vi, then i installed vim, and ran it, but they appeared to be the same program.

vi no longer really exists
vi these days is just a symlink to vim, just like ‘sh’ these days is just a symlink to bash

so, for example, why there is no vimtutor.
i have to do apt-get install vim
and only then i have vimtutor
you'll notice a difference if you try to use vi the same way you use vim. I think some distros come with vi but no vim.

VI exists on super tiny installs. One that comes to mind is something like openwrt

Not entirely correct. vi launches tiny vim.
