>>IWC's are very expensive pleb catchers, designed and marketed specifically to appeal to noveau riche men once they have money but before they know anything about watches.
>I think that's a little harsh. The quintessentially Portuguese line would be a decent wristwatch choice if it wasn't so ridiculously fucking expensive. But yeah I wouldn't buy one simply because their are much fucking higher grade chronographs (amongst other things) for that kind of money.

Look at this add and tell me with a straight face that IWC's target market isn't literally the exact same people who buy Panerais.

They rely on aesthetically appealing to newly well off guys who like shiny objects but have no concept of watch design traditions and norms, and who haven't yet grasped the concept of subtlety.

CHR. WARD is built on literally the same business model of targeting plebs who know nothing about watches and shares IWCs total lack of a brand identity.

Both brands are utterly cringe inducing and should be shunned by a watch enthusiast.

That's more like it!
More seriously, I had only seen Hajime Asaoka's watches in passing and never paid attention to it, but that big balance wheel is really impressive.
I'm having a hard time finding out more about his watches, since he doesn't seem to have a dedicated website for them, but the videos on youtube make for great viewing.
Apparently he's self-taught too, which sounds crazy when you see the quality of the watches he makes.
And now I want a Pura. That big bridge looks crazy. Too bad it hides most of the rest of the movement.
>>
>>58339893
IWC has managed a couple innovative well.

Can't say the same for Christopher Ward, obviously.
>>
>>58339893
All of this is true and much more, but I still think the Portugiser chronograph looks great.
And they have made some pretty neat watches over the years, in the ingenieur family among others.

is this watch (AR1704) any good?

it was a Christmas gift, and didnt like, i always used a digital watch since a kid (using Casio F-91W for 5 years still running good).

The face they made when i said it was crap...even telling me it cost 200€.

Fine what watch would be the next step up from a seiko snk809
>>
>>58341102
it is functional. Personally I would generally prefer no date at all rather than a date that isn't on a horizontal or vertical axis of the dial.

I'd still wear one if I liked the overall watch because I already wear a seiko 5 and I'm not fond of simple day-date wheels either

basically all date complications are form after function to me except where it is clear the designers took care to consider how to incorporate the date rather than just add it as an afterthought.

for instance, a JLC master calender or Rolez Datejust have nice date/calender functions, but the JLC master control or rolex submariner date seem like someone said "it needs a date, add one"

Alright slapped in the new dial and Neptune hands. The hands were painted by Favinov with superluminova, the dial was painted by me with Nemoto Luminova.

Looks like shit, especially magnified, I think I didn't add enough thinner, but it can't be removed now, and behind the thick acrylic at irl magnification it's acceptable, so I'll try not to be bothered by it. At least it's bright as fuck.

Old dial next to it for comparison, if I hate it I can always go back, but the Neptune hands will probably stay.

Not quite but close. I don't like the case style as it has hooded, non standard sized lugs, but that isn't an issue for me as I already have a 5206-6060 which has a dial variant that was also offered in the case the blue dial is in.

Once it gets here I can just swap the blue dial and movement into the 6060 case, since I know 100% they use the same dials.

Orient in general provides excellent value for the dollar. Their movements are not decorated, but reliable, precise, and accurate for the price. Who /utilitarian/ here?
>>
>>58346567
Why is that? I don't have a daily driver but I am wondering why people don't like the heart
>>
>>58346698
generally you open up a movement to be viewed because it's particularly impressive in some way.

That being said I think it's perfectly fine to do it on an cheap watch just for fun. It allows you to get a different view of the escapement, and it a useful tool for explaining/demonstrating how a watch works and sharing the love of watches.

Buy a 70s one, quartz was new and expensive so the movements are well made and the finishing is nice. They can be had for relatively little money and it was the golden age of watch design to boot.

The Swatch Group has decided to stop selling spare parts for their watches to independent repairers such as us. This will come into force on 1/1/2016.

This will affect the owners of the following watch brands:

Longines
Omega
Rado
Union Glashuette
Breguet
Harry Winston
Blancpain
Glashuette Original
Jaquet Droz
Leon Hatot
Tissot
Balmain
Certina
Mido
Hamilton
Calvin Klein
Swatch
Flik Flak

The main argument heard is that the Swatch Group wants to assure the same service level across their brands, and prevent unqualified people tinkering with their watches.

In reality, it’s all about cutting off the reasonably priced repair sector, and to make sure that everyone owning one of the above brands has to pay whatever Swatch Group wants them to pay.

There are of course approved repairers around, but the trend is to squeeze those out of business in order to centralise the whole service industry in Switzerland, and to make sure that everyone has to pay whatever they want to charge.

If you don’t own one of the brands, you still aren’t safe, as the Swatch Group has bought another 17 companies that make parts for watches, such as ETA for movements, Nivarox for hairsprings, and various companies that make hands, cases, crystals, etc.

If you, as a watch lover, would rather not be blackmailed by the Swatch Group, make sure that you buy from a manufacturer that sells parts to the independent trade, such as Nomos. Ask before you buy a watch, and make sure your jeweler understands why you aren’t buying a Swatch Group watch from him the next time around.

Actually, it's better in many ways, for instance the silicon spring, and the free-spring balance wheel.
Only part of the Tudor movement that's "worse" than Rolex movements is the lack of decoration like perlage and cotes de geneve.

Tudor is part of Rolex, and is much more free to innovate than Rolex itself, which has to live up to (i.e. preserve) its legacy.
This explains why Rolexes are still so small for modern standards too, and why their styling is almost unchanged for so many decades.

But yes Tissot is Swatch brand dogshit that is bad even by /wt/ standards. They're valueless, soulless pieces of shit.

not baiting just a watch newfag. Why is swatch brand so terrible? Are the internals of the watch actually bad or is it more of the hate the company kind of thing
>>
>>58355023
they're not too bad. a bit overpriced in the grand scheme of things, but the quality isn't bad.

On what basis do you assert that the Tudor in-house movement is meaningfully inferior to the Rolex 313x? I'm actually curious.

It's both. Swatch is a particularly shitty company that bought up a bunch of Swiss watchmaking companies and then used extremely heavy and disengenious marketing talking about "horological heritage" even though these companies now bear zero relation to their historical companies and are nothing more than names on the dial as Swatch buys cases from china and then throws in a generic ETA movement inside of it. Maybe sprinkle on a little gold plating as well. The market reflects this quite well as even some of Swatch's higher marques like Longines have zero value the second you buy it, and will never be collectible for all of history.

There's an unemployed Australian man named "Archie Luxury" who people like to hate here but he makes a very good point about "shitter wrist watches" of which just about everything between $500 to $3000 that are 100% marketing driven companies owned by soulless conglomerates throwing generic ETAs in gook cases.

Your mom would be infinitely better off going cheaper with an Orient dress watch, or higher with a ladies' tudor/rolex.

Okay, I'll give you slightly more. They have a couple with pretty good ones, e.g. the visodate and clown perpetual, but through and through they are still a cog in the swatch machine. I'm sure you can find a good writeup of what that means online. Even of Swatch's offerings, I would take Hamilton over Tissot because I like their designed more.
>>
>>58355195
desu pretty much all of the amazingly good lume shots are long-exposure.

I don't trust lume demonstrations which aren't on video.

>Rolexes are still so small for modern standards too
>modern standards

Rolex doesn't care about your obese ass enough to ruin the most iconic watch of all time.

If you want a fatboi Rolex, get a DeepSea.

I don't care if Rolex makes their watches bigger. I'm simply explaining why Tudor is what it is.
