What ide do you guys use? I ask because I'm using visual studio for the first time since it is required at work and I love it; they also gave me a full msdn and I was putting it on my home machines.
I'm kind of paranoid about tethering myself to microsoft so I was wondering if there was something else out there that is amazing.
For IDEs, I've only used Eclipse for Java for my university course. When I got sick of Eclipse's shit, I just went to using a text editor and using Java's compiler and debugger. It worked OK, but I didn't do any projects larger than 3 or so files.

Code::Blocks
CodeBlocks and Scite
What language?
Actually doesn't matter. My answer is Emacs regardless.

It's pretty much impossible to do java without an IDE. It's not impossible, but you are going to be wasting a lot of time. I use intellij. eclipse is almost impossible to use, especially in linux.
For everything else, I use sublime + plugins.

He was probably just doing cli stuff for his class though.
