Self-Checkout Exploit

Hi /g/ long time lurker and programmer here, wasn't sure where to post this but this seemed like a good place. Being the autismo that I am I get a kick out of finding ways to fuck with or otherwise manipulate computers used by the general public. My latest discovery is that if you take an item that is on sale, e.g. a toothbrush marked for 1/2 price.

Go to the self checkout, select staff login, swipe your item 8 times (roughly, I've had this work on 7, 9 and 12 tries), then scan your item it should ask you whether the price of an item is correct and allow you to set the price if you select "no", so you can pay £0.01 for a £2.50 item, in my case a toothbrush.

I know that some of you are NEET so this should help you stretch your £$¥€¢, I personally used this technique to use a 50p I found on the street to buy food and toiletries for a homeless guy sat outside the library.

This has worked at sainsburys for me, but I know these systems are shared between companies, so maybe you can get it to work in other places.

Enjoy.
>>
I like to get a bulk bag of skittles, then ring in the peanuts code, weigh it, save like $10
>>
Never thought of that, will try thanks anon
>>
Just steal you faggot

>>
>>58327173
You're right its not the long con. But really is what I'm doing wrong? I'm paying for it after all
>>
>>58326793
Maybe because they ran POSReady on those
>>
>>58327236
>>58327173
And really its not like these fuckhuge companies arnt making a ton of money off of us anyway through markup, I see it as taking back what is deservedly ours. Stolen by corporate conglomerates
>>
For another lifehack try just taking the items out of the store without paying at all!

Wow your life just got hacked
>>
what do I do if one of the workers is standing behind me and asks me if I need any help while im trying to get free shit
>>
>>58327236
paying an arbitrary amount that's not agreed upon by the seller is just theft. i can't tell if you're making this point as a joke or if you actually think this will be some kind of legal defense.

if it's the latter, you would honestly be more likely to get away with theft if you just walk out with the product in your hand and, if caught, just pretend you completely forgot to pay.

if you're being sarcastic, 4chan isn't a good place for it, because there are people here who earnestly more stupid than this, so recognizing that you're being sarcastic is basically impossible
>>
>>58327267
Honestly they won't, I've done it many times, do it quickly enough and don't look sketchy and they wont bother you, they don't get payed enough to care
>>
I highly recommend not doing this, I was a former retail slave who actually was somewhat friendly with the loss prevention guy so I got to talk to him often - they can and WILL find you

the thing is, they wait until you pull your little trick off at least 3 times so that they can actually get you in more serious trouble

and I'm not just bullshitting >>58326927 someone did this exact same thing with bananas, weighing random items

not worth it
>>
>>58327272
That point was quite obviously sarcasm, see my below answer for my actual reasoning. And I understand its illegal and know the risks, however I rely on workers not being payed enough to give a shit
>>
Anyone in NewZealand know any tips and tricks with self checkout machine exploits? Will try just for the lulz

>>
>>58327299
If this is true how do they do it? I pay cash every time. If this is true I will stop
>>
>>58327299
Also I don't regular the shop (obviously)
>>
>>58327348
obviously not your mom usually buys the groceries
>>
was this at walmart that you did this?
>>
>>58327330
>how do they do it?

If they aren't walking around the store, then they are sitting watching the cameras. It is always one or the other. Even if you pay in cash they also are watching what goes through each register on screens in that back room, monitoring for discrepancies

So while it would be easier for them to catch you if you payed with a card (they maintain logs for a few months), they will see that someone went through either an unusual amount of bananas (large weight), or the same person is buying bananas too often
>>
They have cameras and people nearby these things. A red light will go off and someone will 'assist' you.
>>
>>58327299
Hello corporate shill, skittles guy here.

You're bullshitting. No one is watching cameras and making sure I'm really placing a bag of peanuts on the scale when I punch in a skittles code.

I've even been caught red handed pulling off the little scam and just kind of laughed nervously "I'm really broke" and the lady said "I understand but it helps our system know how to restock the proper item so when you do that it messes with our inventory".

She didn't give a shit.
>>
>>58327383
Britbong, sainsburys like it says in the post
>>
>>58326793
Here's another pro tip,
Just don't scan the item if you're gonna steal it you sperg
>>
>>58327413
This
>>
>>58326793

meh, just case your local grocery store, do something that gets the self checkout attendant to come over and use their login and pay attention to how they get in (typically tapping the upper right corner of the screen), and the pin number they use.

I had the login for a few in my area but was too chickenshit to actually use it.

>>
>>58327443
>>58327413
I hate to have to do this, but, are you both fucking retarded?

This is something I saw with my own eyes - I saw multiple people get cuffed or escorted out of the store (depending on the severity), they WILL catch you. I don't know how I can make it any clearer.

Here are some of the things we've had at our store, every one of them failed
>switching clothing tags, putting less expensive ones on higher priced items
>outright walking out of the store with a cart (lol, good luck)
>hiding items inside of other items (guy put an iPad inside of a diaper box, cops responded immediately as he had hit other stores)
>nigger just outright stealing items and leaving packaging on shelves (they waited until 3 times so that they could arrest him. he actually went to jail)
>lady thinks she is genius like OP, ringing everything up as bananas. they waited until she did this to the point of reaching several hundred worth of merchandise taken this way

do I need to go on? I hate those faceless corporations as much as you do, but you're out of your damn mind to think that this is smart. If you really want to get back at them, shop on ebay where you are both cutting out the retail middleman costs, and not supporting chain stores or amazon

Already knew that. This only works with discount only items and even then its not consistent. I could be wrong ,but i think the reason it works is because when item is discounted the new label is printed out by handheld label printer thing and not preprinted labels they normally use.
>>
>>58327609
I don't want to get back at them, I just want free skittles. And I will continue to get them. Because I'm not just going in there with a single bag. I do my grocery shopping and then I get the desert for free. They don't give a fuck and they won't ever catch me. I've done it about 80 times. Smh.

just holding stuff in my hand or in a bag or I would steal a few things and buy one thing

never even bothered with self checkout because people think customers can steal

the shopping cart one is easy, packed walmart and just have an old receipt to show the greeter

I think one time someone noticed I had a mars bar or something in my hand with a friend who just paid. played it off cool

DESU I've done quite a bit of research regarding the prevalence of STD's in prison, and it seems in general people with the bigger nasties are kept separate from the rest. I'm not much bothered by a casual case of chlamydia but HIV is huge so It's nice to know I'm probably safe from that. I've had many dreams where I commit some sort of half-assed crime like stealing a car or robbing a bank then get incarcerated so that my pasty white beta sex-starved ass can get ravaged by hardened, violent, probably dark skinned criminals.

I'd look back at their tattoo'd, muscled abdomen repeatedly coming full-stop as his hips slam into me, causing my butt-fat to ripple in response. I imagine him coming down from behind to roughly twist my head to the side by my hair so he can kiss me and send me a clear message that I am his alone.

It's just too bad I couldn't do that to my family/friends, so I'm not going to be a huge faggot like OP and break the law for a fucking skittle.

Retail drone here. We get "loss prevention" meetings once in a while where they show how shoplifting on self checkouts is done and what we can do. Yes, they watch the shit out of store cameras. They watermark the most used methods and anything that stands out as clever or hard to notice. We get panicked emails from district managers all the time.
>some fuckwit found a way around our dumb fucking machines
>it's on the cashier to prevent it
>because the software is based on a 30 year old version of unix that Toshiba ruined
>so it could run a million motors and sensors hooked up by some retard who thinks every port on the back is a USB
>and so it can run some ancient version of JAVA
>so their outsourced programmers can copy & paste from code academy until the buttons work
>half of which register a button press on mousedown, the other half on mouse up.
>but the point is even if they know how the exploit works they can't fix it because they're stupid.

Let me give you an example. Where I work our self checkouts have a flaw that if you run out of paper at the end of an order it will apply the paid cash to the next order too. So a customer buys shit & pays with a $100 bill at the right time, the machine shits itself and they can buy a package of fucking ramen and it thinks you just paid with another $100 bill and spits out 99.75 in change for free. You'd think this is a big deal, instead they set the machine to blink when there's 1/3 of the roll of paper left because they literally can't understand how or why the paper sensor is linked to the cash paid variable.

They are also set to raise an alarm and reject any item from the deli that is sold by weight & costs less than $2. They think you're cheating them by only buying one of their overpriced and bad tasting potato wedges or just enough lunchmeat to give to a toddler.

At minimum 25% of the cost of everything is to compensate for theft and returns. It only goes up because the jews play on the niggers and push that number ever higher. You know what the base markup is on produce & dairy? 39%. That's because you assholes sample grapes without paying, bruise fruit that now nobody wants to buy, mix cheap apples and expensive apples to save a little money, leave perishables on shelves outside of a refrigerator, put watermelons on eggs and just generally be fuckwits. Society suffers for your faggotry. You didn't seriously expect them not to. The next time you buy $100 in shit, remember 1/3 of that cost is because you're a dirty nigger.
>>
I can't do this in Poland. Motherfuckers watch the self-check out registers like hawks and I don't think I saw a staff login button anywhere.

>>
>>58330486

Bullshit. I used to work as a grocery manager at a national chain. We called any theft, expiration, or other loss "shrink." On any grocery item we can expect 2% shrink, anything higher and it gets sent to loss prevention for an investigation. Produce items have alot of shrink, but that's because we throw out alot of it whenever it's blemished or is approaching its expiration date.

Theft is costly, but it's not a big driver of costs. Our highest shrink items were health and beauty products, which average 10-12%.

tl;dr you're an idiot who has no idea what he's talking about

At Winco I've typed in the wrong item code, a more expensive item, and the machine locked up requesting a worker. There must be some detection.

I know stores like Albertsons and Krogers/Ralphs are unionized so there is a reason why their items are overpriced.

Over the course of a year, weigh all the items you normally buy. Extract a list off the items that weigh the same +-5%. Sort the results by the highest price difference. Go to the store, buy one of the expensive item and one of the weight matched cheaper items. Hold the expensive item and the cheap item up to the scanner, making sure the cheap item has the barcode towards the scanner. Scan the cheap item and put the expensive item on the scale. Scan the other cheap item by turning it so the barcode face the scanner and put it on the scale. Easy and descreet. And gives you plausible deniability. If you need both items, you just saved some money.
