I know this is trivial as fuck, but I'm not a smart man. I transferred everything from my 1 TB external to my new 4TB and all of the sudden it's 2.5 TB. How did I fuck up?

I asked /b/ this afternoon but I had to go to a lunch meeting and missed most of it and now it's gone. They seemed to agree it was something about a "4k write speed"? Does that sound right?

Do I need to go back to NTFS or can I keep it exFAT?

Is it this guy?

Even if all your 59k files were overallocated by 64k bytes, that's still just ~4GB wasted.
>>
>>58305236
I just dragged and dropped everything, was there a better/cleaner way of doing it?

I also can't seem to find it in the defrag window. It shows up in Disk management as "Basic" and "healthy" but it's nowhere to be found when I try a defrag.

Any ideas?

4 TB =/= 4 TiB

It's more than likely this. Your allocation size is what size each 'block' is on your drive.

For example, if your allocation size is set to 64KB and you've got a 32KB file, you'll need one block for that file, but other files cannot occupy that block. So you're using 32KB of that block while the other 32KB is unused, but also inaccessible.

Was the 1TB external using disk compression? If the data is still there, format the 4TB drive and copy it again.
>>
>>58305745
So the 4k byte would be the best use of space i.e. smallest block? I think that's what I did, but I could always copy everything off and try it again.

>>58305773
It was not, I more or less used it as a flash drive. DL'ed movies from my PC to play elsewhere. That's why I want my new one to be exFAT so I can play on my PS4.

Thanks guys for the help!

I just looked and I apparently checked this option.

Would that account for it being almost 1.5 times larger though? like >>58305236 said?

Check out something like
https://windirstat.net/
See what's taking up all the space.
