Wholy shit anon, I just tried it after using the stock player for so long, that it blew my mind! I think it's even better than my computer (well, I have a shitty 10 year old laptop and my phone is a Galaxy S5).
I'm guessing the downside is that it uses more battery, so I'll be using the stock player at work all day long just to block outside noise, but use Neutron outside of it.

If I understand correctly the way push services work is if for example your phone's screen is off it will send all messages from third party services to one server (e.g. Google's or Apple's) and your phone maintains a connection with that one server instead of all the third party services (like WhatsApp).

Either you could (in no particular order):
1. Try disabling battery optimization for WhatsApp

For anyone that uses K-9 instead of Gmail, do you get notifications whenever you receive new mail automatically without having the app open (like an IM client ie whatsapp messenger etc) or do you have to have the program running in the background at all times to get them? I've set up my main email account on it, not the google one, and I get jackshit unless I open K-9 and manually refresh.

I don't have greenify or other task killers/cleaners by the way, and I'm running unofficial CM13 on a Moto G4P without gapps, thus the need for F-Droid and cracked apps updated with APK Track.
