What is your opinion on Vala?
I personally quite like it as a general purpose language and it is nice that it generates C source that you can tweak if needed.

there is literally no reason to use it unless you're writing shitty GNOME related apps and even if you end up maintaining and actively using your vala app you'll probably end up rewriting it in C after you get sick of Vala and its weird problems
it's not a real programming language, it's the c equivalent of those stupid scripting languages that compile into javascript so you don't actually have to write javascript

I actually did not find it through /g/.
I was looking through Rosetta code to see different solutions to problems and then looking up the most interesting languages there.
I then went on to install it to give it a try since it seems alright and have ended up writing an IRC -> Discord bridge in it.

i don't really understand why you'd bother with vala. it's a dead language made for a specific use case. you could've spent this time learning rust or go or something with an actual future. it's like picking up Dart in 2016.

I bothered with it because it piqued my interest. There is nothing wrong with spending some time messing about with new things.
That being said, in the future I would probably just write it in C# or something to that effect.
Rust would be lost on me since I don't really care about systems programming.
