Rack mount monitors /g/
Why are they so fucking expensive?
It seems like a great way to fill 3u of my rack with one and run via cables from my three servers to have a local console, or a dashboard even.
Anyone had a similar idea/do this?
I saw some 7inch 1280x600 Mons for like $60 on Amazon, I could probably just build myself one with a bit of cad and a mail order laser cut. What with 7in being 6.1 inches wide or so + the metal frame it would come out just around 19in for 3 wide.

Rack displays are intended for broadcast applications, and fucking everything is expensive in that segment, even a basic on-camera monitor might be $800-2000 with most not having even HD resolution.

Yeah, I realize that part, but I figured there would be plenty of Chinese ones available for cheap
I just want to unghetto my rack and I don't have the space for a slide out kvm

Well, you can scour eBay for some used units perhaps, just pay attention to the ports available, as they will almost always be BNC, and you'd need a pricy adapter to get any RGB signal converted to it. most of these are also NTSC/PAL or similar, so colors will be screwed up, if it at all matters.

Those are too big and bulky.
They won't impress the ladies very much either

Looking at their 1280x800 is 6.339in wide, that's just over 19in wide. Ehh, I'm putting this on the list of things I'll maybe do.

Get a rackmount VESA mount, and slap your own monitor in. VGA KVM with selector will let you swap between different servers.
Because why wouldn't they be expensive?

Or get a VESA mount, and drill holes in a blank 4U.
