I should note that I have a networking/programming background. I'm not a total peon.

Follow that guide and understand part of hacking is being able to do research.

as in you have an associates degree in information science?
you are a total peon.

If I am a peon then what's someone who has zero knowledge?

You. Stupid twat.

you know as much about flow control as my grandma

Do you want to hack or be a respectable cyber security expert?
If hack, just learn python, install Kali, read how to use tools such as Scapy/Metasploit/hping/nmap etc and off you go.
The latter? It's research research and more research. Read all papers on SANS and IEEE, learn OWASP of by hard, grind networking, intrusion, intelligence gathering, risk assessment, ENISA, NIST, ISO and 3 more frameworks that elude me. Create a stream of information that feeds you the latest news and risks.
If you think turning on Hping3 or LOIC and try to DDoS someone, or make shitty keyloggers and trying to do SQL injection without understanding what business logic means, I would tell you to give up.
