Alright /g/ I'm switching from a shitty 60hz laptop screen

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Alright /g/ I'm switching from a shitty 60hz laptop screen to a 144hz monitor soon. I'm also getting a brand new PC with top specs that should be able to run Dota2 and similar games at a steady 150+ fps at max settings.

People tell me the difference between 144hz and 60hz is night and day. Considering I'm going from a shitty laptop which overheats and causes frame rates to drop to 30 to a 144hz setup with an i7-6700k and a GTX 1080, could anyone explain just how much of a difference I'll experience?

Do you like memes?
>>
>>58205807
It's the single best improvement you can make. Incredibly fluid, and makes FPS games much easier.

Get one OP. The difference actually is night and day.
Don't listen to the poorfag Luddites on /g/. Some of these fags will even try to convince you SSD's are a placebo as well.
>>
>>58205904
>>58205920
Don't worry, I'm buying one for sure. The thing is I'm away from home for the holidays so it'll be a while until I get to actually use the setup. In the meantime, I'd like someone to describe vividly what the difference is like. I keep hearing how amazing it is but nobody is able to put it into words.
>>
>>58205954
Smoother, less input lag. Imagine closing your eyes 12 times a second vs keeping them open. It's just smooth

Same thing OP! I ordered a 144hz monitor just now too accompany this stuff that I had to get for my new 1080

>Tfw going out of state for a few days and will come back the day they are delivered along with more money than i've had in months
feels fucking good

Get the 1440 TN Acer Predator
>>
>>58206174
Nice one. I have the same motherboard, processor, and GPU.

When I arrive back home it'll be my first time playing on a proper system. Going from a shitty laptop to a top-end PC with 144hz will feel amazing.

>144hz

It's one of those things that I advise you to try before buying. This one time we did some testing of a couple of screens side by side. While a friend of mine swore by the fluidness of the 144hz screen, personally I couldn't tell the difference between 144 and 60hz.
>>
I'm in the same boat as you OP. Getting a new rig with a GTX 1080 and I'm sure I want a 144 Hz monitor. I don't know if I should get a 1080p or a 1440p monitor though, seems the GTX 1080 struggles to get 60 fps in quite a few games at 1440p already, and what's the point of 144Hz then. Still the better resolution and screen size might be nice. Was looking at this monitor: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/BcTrxr/dell-monitor-s2716dg

Poorfags like yourself do. Cant afford it? call it a meme.
>>
seriously, why is there no 2560x1080p monitors at 100hz+ that are less than £300

Like what the fuck
>>
>>58207973
can anyone help me out?

I don't want to get stuck in the 60hz trench forever and I want something more than standard 1080p, budget of £300 (or like $301)
>>
>>58207973
>ultrameme
Stop.
Get a regular 16:9 or, even better, a 16:10 monitor at 2560x1440/1600.
You don't get any more space or whatever you like to call it from a 21:9 meme ratio.
The only thing that counts here is the amount of pixels, which you obviously have more of in a regular QHD 16:9 display.
>>
>>58208513
why is this such a shit time to shop for monitors
>>
>>58208594
Only for 60+ Hz.
You can get good 28" 4k monitors for under $300 right now.
>>
>>58208740
but 60hz is like poverty tier,

i could walk to the shops and back between frames
>>
>>58205807
lol a gtx 1080 for doter 2

kid you can run 4k downsamp 144fps on dota 2 with a gtx 960. prolly even less
>>
>>58205807
You can't see smoothness beyond 60fps. 144hz only matters in competitive gaming where you would want to drive your game's fps to 200+. This makes frames get rendered and displayed on the screen at exact 1/144 second intervals consistently. It will FEEL a little more responsive and tighter, but you won't see more smoothness. G-sync and free-sync can almost match this however, and it will let you get most of the benefits while also not having to run your games at a ridiculously high fps.
>>
>>58208954
you're full of shit, i switched to 144 recently and the difference is clearly visible, even if you're just moving the cursor around your desktop
>>
>>58209021
Okay ya got me, but this study shows that the upper limit of perceiving frames as perfectly stable on a monitor is 90Hz:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4314649/
>>
>>58209094
>Okay ya got me, but this study shows that the upper limit of perceiving frames as perfectly stable on a monitor is 90Hz:
Not him but if you read that it clarifies that that is only for a uniform distribution and its inverse - i.e. flashing the whole screen black, then white, then black etc.

The more interesting result is that if you make half the screen black and the other half white and then switch it, people can detect a flicker up to 800hz
>>
>>58209241
Yeah, eyes are weird, detecting smoothness based on the nature of what is being displayed. For any conventional media, 60Hz is still near the upper limits of what we can see.
>>
>>58209310
Eyes are weird. But also it's dubious whether we should be using a completely predictable repeating pattern to determine the upper limit since melting the individual frames into one cohesive smooth picture is probably easier for the brain to do if it doesn't change.

My fuckiing 7870 is enough to have 144fps on dota you piece of shit
>>
>>58209508
On the other hand, we've barely seen any single-threaded CPU improvement in years.
>>
>>58209591
And subhuman trash keeps buying i7 processors to "upgrade" and play video games
>>
>>58209625
Hay mang I'm still on an i5-4670k. Gonna ride this baby till she dies. Literally no worthwhile upgrades.
>>
>>58207132
Something must be wrong with your eyes mate, I'd get them checked if you can't tell the difference.
>>
4k or 5k are more worthwhile. It improves more than just games, and improves non-fps games more noticably than 144hz monitors. Also, you can get IPS 4k and 5k monitors, whereas 144hz monitors only use TN panels. Color is just as important as refresh rate and resolution.
The only big problems with 4k and 5k are that textures are often so low res that games still look eh, and windows still doesn't work well with high DPI screens.
144hz is good, but a 4k or 5k monitor is better for the money.
>>
Slightly off topic, but is there a known guide out there for setting up dual monitors? I know it's fairly easy but I want a full retard proof guide with tons of shit in it.
>>
>>58211158
You literally just plug it in and turn it on. You only need to go to display settings if you have a different size or position.
>>
>>58207132
>>58208954
>>58205807

Have a 144 and 60 side by side, moving a folder from one to the other was painful to look at the 60.

Its night and day, however, there is one metric that is more important and thats contrast.

contrast is kind and determines what you perceive as better or not, not ips vs tn, not 8bit vs 10bit, fucking contrast.

read reviews on 144hz displays and look for ones that have high static contrast and that alone, your eyes get use to colors being slightly off so dont limit yourself to ips, that shit may not shift color at angles but it shifts contrast and makes dark areas just as bad as tn does.

hell if its in your budget, there are a few monitors that are 3000:1 and 5000:1 by benq and visio that i would recommend over 144hz

The difference between 60 to 80 by itself is mind-boggling how can you not see 60-144hz? Are you watching YouTube or something?
>>
>>58207286
I can't make my 1070 go below 60fps on my 1440p screen in any game with normal min-max kinds of settings
>>
>>58210928
That's why I have 10-bit color depth TN
IPS is a meme for your phone screen
>>
I had a hp2311x and r9 280x a week ago. Gifted myself a gtx 1080 and a pg278q. Let's say the difference is so big that it felt like one of the best things in my life.

It just makes everything nice and easy on the eye. Even going back to late '90s shooters has a huge improvement at 144hz and feels like rediscovering them. Tracking people with automatic weapons is so much easier. I can tell the difference even going from 110FPS to 144+.
