i want to use my grandparents wifi as they have unlimited data, they live around the corner from me, and it is roughly about 430m away in a straight line.
what kind of antenna do i need to pick up a wifi network that far away?
there are also alot of people around here getting rid of satellite dishes, can i somehow nigga rig a dish up to my pc?
>>
>>58205736
Pringles can antenna.
>>
>>58205736
Yeah just look up wifi bisector and you should find some stuff about it
>>
>>58205736
>what kind of antenna do i need to pick up a wifi network that far away?

You can't... A typical wifi router have a range of about ~30m.

But you can use wifi repeaters I guess. Or a wifi extender like NETGEAR Nighthawk EX7000 that gives you ~50 meters.

You can set up wifi repeaters between your homes, but you need a way to power them I guess.

Here's a list of antennas and suggested distances from one vendor:
http://i.mt.lv/routerboard/files/antenas-160404123306.pdf

I see that they have a $59 antenna intended for distances up to 12KM

>>58206635
powerline adapters are garbage in 70% of houses and don't extend to the main grid, silly :)
>>
>>58205926
Just buy a pair of any of those, there are other vendors as well. Transmitting signal 430m away in a straight line should be easy and cheap.
>>
>>58206635

Nice "I don't have a clue what I'm talking about" you got there, buddy.
>>
>430m
Not doable without hooking up active directional antenna to the router
>>
>>58205736
Gonna need a badass directional antenna. Not cheap.

LinusTechTips has a "Holy Shit" episode on one.
>>
if you could find a box of old routers (real real cheap or junk/free) that were working to an extent and were repeater mode compatible in the admin setup that would help tremendously; but problem is that they would be chaining the range of multiple hops and each hop would half your throughput [wds/repeating rules of nature]. so you would have to really jack up the default throughput on your gparents router's end to make up for the difference initially and then arrange the highest max throughput on each router hop to step down the routers from most powerful to least powerful to your end. plus on top of that if your gparents primary router was broadcasting a TKIP or AES WPA2 signal you'd be out of luck anyway because most of those older repeaters/lan configurable routers only supported open or WEP. so you would literally have to login to their router's web admin gui and change the signal type but they would probably notice that pretty quickly unless their password could be hashed to WEP standards and then you went and re-configured all their devices to the new standard without them realizing what was going on. then you always have the power issue cause each unit would have to have power on it. at that point you may as well just attempt a massive wired chain and try to cover it up shallow (weather can royally jack this up though, had an underground cable [IN PVC] kill over on me recently from lower ground flooding event and had to just wds the lan network, was not worth effort of replacement). if your properties are adjacent to each other at certain intervals you can therefore use the individual routers as boostpoints. but if you had to go anything other than wireless watch out your subnets would be a living nightmare though lol. just my 2cents [my house network was fun to design].

EX: on hops 300mbps // 150mbps // 75mbps // 37.5mbps// 18.75mbps // 9.753mbps (still enough to stream) // 4.876mbps // 2.438mbps (will take patience but if its worth the unlimited still).
>>
in other words quite a holy shit indeed anons. an engineering feat...
>>
Just run 500m of lan cable, you pussy. You could put it in 500m of pvc pipe and bury it.
>>
>>58207368
cat5/6 ethernet can only be run up to 100m, silly
>>
>>58205736
>430m
Too far way.
Just pay for service you neet.
>>
>>58207340
Wtf m8
That's an insane amount of stupidity.
If you use 2 directional antennas facing each other you would have a more reliable and faster connection without any of your bullshit and you could have reached way further that way.

Just set up 2 directional antennas and at the receiving end connect a switch and access point for example.

Probably something like a point-to-point wireless bridge. I don't know if affordable ones will span 430m though. I haven't checked so don't quote me but I know the cheaper models won't.

There you go, man.
>>
well it is an stretch of a goal anyway and at least the math was right, plus at least the yard would have wifi too. lol

but wouldn't running that powerful of a single 2.4ghz or 5ghz band link (in DBs) through the antennas cause some wacky interference issues though with surrounding bluetooth and cordless home phones if you had them (course check the channels but still being that strong)? plus how would you natively tie in such an antennae directly into a router or switch without a converter? the antennae would have to be rj45 Ethernet passed and probably POE to pump that powerful of a connection through to keep the band stable over the length of the broadcast.

just thought you could use an antennae with a coax for passing through to a docsis modem at the receiving house (local lan ip on gparents side would be set aside to form a logical bridge for modem to pass through its internet traffic) but it would mess up your subnets and nat could cause other issues for accessing local devices on the other side if needed. its still quite a long shot.

or you could always at that point use the $50 fryer strainer mod antennae mentioned; being USB based and have a hosting unit at the receiving house capture the signal then passing it through a means of p2p shared internet connection with the rest of the house so you could use it with multiple devices. but its a long shot anyway you go (especially in terms of stability/reliability).

at least someone trying to be helpful m8.
>>
>>58206635
a shit
>>
>>58206635

Those and 1,400 feet of CAT6 and you're good to go.
>>
>>58207388
Coaxial cables can run up to 2500m, but then they don't use RJ-45 connectors, so you would need special networking equipment at each end to connect the coaxial cable to the routers/networks.

I'm using the Kasens N9600 antenna. Getting in the city wifis 200-300m away. When even possible you'll get the best connection with this for cheap. It even has a Ralink chipset and works with Linux out of the box.

It's from China. Maybe you find a reseller in your country if you can't wait -2-3 weeks.

He's never heard of the Pringles can antenna

Oh yes, the Americans of course.

Get raped and kill yourself, you retarded fucking faggot sack of nigger shit with down syndrome.
>>
>>58211860
Yeah it's called a MoCa adapter. You'd just need 2 of them should be less than $100
If your brave you can sling your coax up onto the cable or phone companies lines. You'll only get shocked if you touch power and they won't know unless a technician visits and odds are he wouldn't touch it without knowing what house it leads to
>>
>>58211932
Yeah and watch your porn in their living room
>>
Don't network cables lose data integrity after ~150 metres?
>>
>>58205736(OP)
just hack your near wifi acces point and problem solved...more cheap and esay i have 3 AP near my house but i have "unlimited data" kek so....only use them for "proyects"
>>
>>58205736
Ubiquiti nano station will do that easily. Get two and point toward each other
>>
>>58213717

this is what I use, I can get 130Mb if the link view is clear
>>
>>58205736
Its impossible. When I stole my neighbours wifi, 20m was the maximum with a directional antenna.
>>
I've seen someone do this on /g/ before. They had a tripod with a dish hooked up at their bedroom window.
>>
Set up a ptp if you have line of sight
>>
>>58205736
Just buy 2 modems and trench some coax
>>
Single direction wifi antenna. Mine gives me half a mile of signal strength
>>
Maybe get two mobile data routers and connect them from you and your family's house?
>>
>>58209532
America was one of the last countries to reduce unlimited data access you moron.
>>
>>58215086
Then maybe your wireless adapter is dog shit

t. freeloader currently stealing neighbor's wifi ~40m across the street using nothing more than tl-wn722n
