Is the RX470 /g/-approved? I'm not falling for memeVidia this time.
>>
If thats all you need buy it.

I use one to cover the gap till HBM2/3 brings 4k into realistic realms

perfect 4 1080p gaming 60fps
>>
>>58197769

For 1080p/60hz I believe it's the best performance/price card. Although that may depend on your regional pricing. It will be serious upgrade from a 680, so enjoy.
>>
>>58197769
480 if you can but this should work too
>>
>>58197769
Yes.
It's not as powerful as the 1060 in most cases, but it has extremely good value and excellent DX12/Vulkan scaling.
>>
>>58197769

For the love of god go for the 4GB 480. That's what I did. Those 30 extra dollars will be really worth it.
>>
>>58198425
Where I live 480s pricing is ridiculous. You can get RX470 for ~$200, while the RX480 costs $270 (both 4GB, both prices converted from my currency). Doesn't seem to be worth it, especially since 470 can be overclocked to 480 level.

>>
I have the 470 anon, it's fucking fine. Mix of high/ultra settings in every game, there arent any games good enough to warrant spending more than $200 on a gpu everything fucking sucks.
>>
>>58199887
This. My R9 380X runs DOOM 4 ultra 1080p constant 75fps.
>>
>>58197769
>GTX680 has died yesterday
How did it die? I ask as I lost my GTX570 earlier this year with artifacting when you tried doing anything that needed video processing.
>>
>>58197769
I've been wondering if I should go from 670 SLi to an rx480.
When are AMD supposed to be releasing their high performance cards? If it's before Q2 next year I'll probably just wait.
>>
>>58201012
Early next year but I don't think there's an actual date.
>>
>>58200959
Same exact way. Later it started artifacting in games as well, and finally I couldn't even boot to OS.
What brand was your GTX570?
>>
>>58201325
>>58200959
>nvidia
>the company that kills its cards with driver updates
meanwhile dumbasses shitpost claims of no drivers against teh competition
how hilarious
>>
>>58201362
It probably wasn't a driver update, but yeah, I feel like the fancy NV tech like physx, video transcoding with CUDA, gameworks, gayforce experience and the whole superior nvidia gaming experience is grossly overhyped. I'll go back to AMD, I've heard they improved the drivers a lot since my HD3870 days.
>>
>>58201325
>What brand was your GTX570?
Palit, it was a good little performer but when I took it out it the PCB had actually warped. It was going to be upgraded at some point anyway but its a shame that it pulled its own trigger.

I think it might have something to do with the design limitation in older cards that meant dual monitors always ran them at 3d clocks, this meant that whenever the PC was on the card was always at 52c+ since it never probably idled.

I guess the warping either fucked up some BGA solder joints or created a gap between the cooler and some other component since the GPU die never got high. My guess is the memory got damaged from heat as the artifacts had that frame buffer corruption look about them, the artifacts would even go away if I closed the program that started them.
>>
>>58201490
>CUDA
This is one of their strong points IMO, I do lots of 3D modeling such as blender and they all thrive on cuda.

I would go AMD too but OpenCL isn't support sucks compared to CUDA.
>>
>>58201632
GPU die temperatures never got high under load*
>>
>>58200637
ayy, and my 470 runs it same settings/frames at 1440p, really no need to go for super high end "l33t gaymer" shit
>>
>>58201490
amd drivers are dank as hell now, blows nvidia out of the water
>>
>>58201632
huh, interesting. My card was also Palit. It was warped, too. When it started acting up I could temporarily get it to work by propping it up with a pen, so you're probably right about cracked solder joints. I tried blowing hot air on random chips and later the oven method, but neither worked.
>>
>>58201834
>My card was also Palit
We could be onto something here, maybe that's why palit don't cost as much as some of the other brands.

>I could temporarily get it to work by propping it up with a pen
kek lego was my method

On mine it looked like the PCB was warped like a banana but the cooler was still pretty flat, shining a light into it revealed maybe a few mm gap around the middle but it doesn't take much to prevent a good thermal seal.

I wonder how long these things normally last anyway, it just seems like the humble card slots were never designed for such heavy monsters.
>>
>>58197769
A second-hand GeForce GT 430
>>
Not Op but I just got the 470. Pretty nice so far but I got the MSI one which is suppose to be overclocked
>>
>>58198425
Shit decision. Get the 470 8gb. The extra power of the 480 is minute and not worth it.

But many games need the extra vram. Get the better option the rx 480 with 4gb is a shit card. Don't let /g/ give you shitty advice.

>>
>>58197769
it does 1080p high-ultra pretty well, only spend extra on a 480 if it's only like 10-20$ more, or only buy the 8gb 480 if you plan to crossfire
>>
>>58202440
If you don't care about vram then it's better to get $260 R9 Fury
>>
>>58197829
This OP.
Just be sure to get a good brand/version with a decent warranty so it lasts you a good while while the next leap in perfomance comes around at the same respectable prices. A RX470 should last you around 3 years of decent 1080p gaming
>>
>>58197769
two RX480's in crossfire
>>
>>58197769
go with the 480, it's only a little bit more and the prices for a higher end 470 is roughly the same for a low end 480 like the msi armor 4gb.
>>
whats a cool running modern card, i value silence more than extra frames
>>
>>58204168
2-way tie between XFX's cards and MSI's, slight edge to XFX for customer service though. Your choice at the end of the day.
>>
>>58204168
probably MSI's gaming X cards due to their fan size

Most cards are quiet though

the XFX GTR is about the best 480 to buy though, Sapphire one is always good though

>>
>>58204168
asus gtx 10XX triple fan cards

>why green jew?
nvidia cards run cooler and that plays into your love for silence.

>why asus triple fans
the triple fans at low rpm can dissipate the heat pretty well while still being quiet

more fans, low rpm > less fans, high rpm
>>
>>58197920
*in medium settings
>>
>>58204321
this isn't the 390, the 480 has fairly comparable power consumption to the 1060, and gives you better performance for the DX12/Vulkan future
>>
>>58204321
>more fans, low rpm > less fans, high rpm
More fans also means smaller fans, which means higher RPM to move the same amount of air as a larger one. That's not really a rule that's universally true.
>>
>>58201362
i actually like AMD and you read like you're angry
>>
Should get an 8GB model of these things?

Seems like VRAM requirements are skyrocketing due to the consoles allowing devs to be lazy as fuck.
>>
>>58197829
try whoring around for cheap nitro 480 or zotac/palit 1060 if possible, cards may differ in power consumption quite a bit so be aware of that if youre running some 3rd world power plant in your pc, otherwise go with whatever 470 you wish(xfx/ntro)
>>
>>58204334
boi, hear me out

the dude said he valued silence over extra frames, and while the difference in power draw is not as great between cards, nvidia still has a lead in efficiency, which plays into the noise made and shit like that.

>>58204354
well yeah, there's a balance that should be considered into coolers, heatsink size, fan size and fan count. the asus card has more fans to move heat and a much bigger heatsink to pull heat away from the core, it does lose out on fan size but the performance difference should not be too great.
>>
>>58204462
also 8gb and 6gb versions of those cards are much better since the difference isnt big in most cases
>>
>>58204469
He should wait for a passively cooled 1050ti in that case
>>
>>58204455
now and days, 4gb's is the minimum for a smooth experience on newer games at higher settings, some games are pushing that further like doom's higher settings. no doubt games made in the coming years will demand even more vram at higher settings and that might come sooner than it should so maybe playing it safe and getting the 8gb is the way to go.
>>
>>58204382
yes amd is good for once
>muh 1070 dx12 perrrrformanceeeee
as the house goes up in fealms
>>
>>58204534
8gb will be fine for few years i hope, also RYZEN HYPE
>>
>>58204531
well he never specified on what kind of performance he wanted, he just went all "muh silence" and left us to that. so I decided to answer with a solution that universally worked across all cards.

also he could go with a passively cooled card, but then the card becomes entirely reliant on the cooling your case can provide and I don't want push that issue on people since there are so many different kinds of cases.

>>58204585
Ryzen having great performance and all is great, but price is everything and I really hope amd steps on intel's toes and offer great performance per dollar.
>>
>>58204658
i too hope for amd to push their prices below intels but i guess its too early to say... pretty sure they will have more than competitive prices. athlon x2 64 3800+ forevah
>>
>>58197769
>>58201632
>>58201834
>>58201973
kek, I've got an EVGA 680 and it's still going strong even at 100% load in games with no artifacting or physical warping.
>>
>>58204863
good people here could tell me what 3800+ meant? no google mumbo jumbo but what the fuck its only marketing shit for 2ghz processor?
>>
>>58204902
try bf1 with endless planes crashing into the ground right in front of you.. i dare you..
fuck this life and fuck the need of upgrading pc's, people need to grow more and pass that shit
>>
>>58197769
Only if you are going to OC it.
>>
>>58204948
athlon's were some really good processors around 10 years ago back when amd had a fighting chance and in a lot of cases kicked intel's ass.
>>
>>58204989
Back then AMD dominated Intel in home computers, this is why Intel had to go full on jew and exclude AMD CPUs from prebuilds as much as it could.
>>
>>58204967
Shitty games like battlefield are the reason people like you stop playing games.
>>
>>58197769
RX 470 8GB or RX 480 8GB.
Make no mistake, both are middle-class cards.
>>
480 8GB > 470 8GB > 480 4GB > 470 4GB
>>
>>58197829

>HBM2/3 brings 4k into realistic realms
>>
>>58197769
I have the Sapphire RX 470 4gb with the blower style cooler, and a FX-8350, and I run Witcher 3 on ultra without hairworks at 40-50fps. Some people might sperg out over it being under the magical 60fps number but it looks and feels smooth to me.

It plays rocket league on highest at 144fps, LoL on very high at 144fps, haven't tried anything else yet. It'll crush all esports games and should play most AAA games on ultra at a decent framerate.

For being a step below an already mid-range card the 470 is pretty strong.
>>
>>58204902
I have a 660 and it is still working fine. I will probably buy a rx470 when/if it starts acting up like OP. I have a RV02 for my case so the card is oriented 90 degrees unlike a normal case. So maybe the fact that it has less stress put on it is why it has lasted so long.
>>
Why the fuck would you not save up a bit more money and get a 480, that would be a much more noteworthy upgrade
>>
>>58206146
If the rest of his computer is as old as his card then getting a 480 would just bottleneck things.
>>
>>58197829
You mean like GDDR5X already does on Titan XP and GTX 1080 ?
>>
>>58205705
60 has never been smooth
>>
>>58197769

> unironically considering the RX470

You're better of re-buying that GTX680, bruh.

3/10 your bait worked
>>
if youre very tight on money or dont want to spend a lot rx 470 4gb will be great
