I'd recommend atool. It does basically the same but with additional features like, if the archive has more files than one, it automatically extracts the shit into a new directory instead of shitting up the current one.

just install zsh for fuck's sake. you can still use bash for scripts and almost all bash functions will work just fine.

Iv'e installed Antergos on my x220 and I'm having some problems.
1. Middle click scroll with trackpoint doesn't work. I checked here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/TrackPoint#Middle_button_scroll
And when I enter the commands under that ~/.xinitrc, the middle button scroll works. I inserted these commands to that file but it doesn't work on startup. What do?

What do you want your laptop to do when the lid closes? Suspend or hibernate?

That file picker is an utter trash. I suggested that they should make a brand new file chooser widget. The maintainer that I was talking to looked interested to do so. But he is not in charge of file picker.

I think if you submit a good file picker in gtk they will probably merge it.

I then decided to make one for gtk before I realized what if I make a good Qt picker. I don't think GNOME is interested in making things better.

GNOME doesn't add basic features, they remove them. They only add niche autistic features.

So... fast forward a couple of weeks, I am brushing up on my C++ to make a nice Qt picker instead. When I submit my patch I intend to become a contributor to the LxQt project. However the problem with LxQt is it does not have a standard desktop framework like GNOME and KDE. They want to be "modular". I wanted to add some DE agnostic features to the project.

>>58192726
What exactly are you looking for?
>>
I also want to stay away from GNOME because I am absolutely terrified after I saw Vala. Pantheon also is written in this GObject monstrosity.

C++ is MUCH more simpler to learn and apply. Which restricts me to either KDE or LxQt. The new KDE framework along with it's akonadi server is currently broken beyond saving.

Hey guys I have a slight problem, I thought I'd ask here since I didn't find a concrete solution by googling.

I use i3, and have a bit of a problem when I try to play games. When the game is full-screen (let's take for example, Frozen Synapse), my Super-hotkeys don't work. So I can't, for example, send the current fullscreen'd game to another workspace, or switch myself to another workspace to check something else outside the game.

How can I set it up so that my i3 hotkeys still work while in a fullscreen program? Is it a command I have to include when launching the game, or is it something in my i3 config?

Late reply but hey, work is work.
I'm looking to stream music to iOS devices, Android devices and GNU/Linux laptops. I wan't to preserve as much of the native experience as possible, so no or minimal additional installation on clients. I'm thinking DAAP server and UPnP for android. I know both iOS and android support those nativly.
For steaming movies I'm not sure yet, but I definitely want to pair it with an deluge or transmision webpage to download new media.
This would all be hosted on 1 VPS, so I'm thinking of working with Linux containers, so just they are easily exportable as well.

What could be better to actualy LEARN it other than actually LEARNING how it's built and how it all connects together to make a working system you fucking faggot?

When I was 8 I had no fucking clue about ICEs.
But then I took a lawnmower, took it apart and assembled back together. Didn't work. So i did it again and it worked.
Gave me some insight.
Then I took a Jawa 223 engine apart and put it together.

At 12 I was proficient enough to dissasemble and reassemble a Rover K series engine, put it back together and making sure it would work.

debian testing is a piss poor solution for desktop use because it doesn't get the security updates.
Stable has dedicated security updates.
Unstable has the "security through obscurity" as it updates often.
Testing has neither.
It can take weeks before a patched package gets from sid to testing

besides
"debian testing" is literally Ubuntu.
But with security updates.
Apparmor by default.
Better support for 3rd party software including proprietary.
And user repositories

>debian testing is a piss poor solution for desktop use because it doesn't get the security updates.
It does. That's why there is a testing-security repository. You're confusing package updates (upstream) with package security patches (maintainers).

From: https://wiki.debian.org/Status/Testing
>Thus, there is security support for testing, but in general it cannot be expected to be of the same quality as for stable:
>Updates for testing-security usually get less testing than updates for stable-security.
>Updates for embargoed issues take longer because the testing security team does not have access to embargoed information.
>Testing is changing all the time which increases the likelyhood of problems with the build infrastructure. Such problems can delay security updates in testing.

What you could've have said is "security is better on stable than on testing" but what you said is factually wrong.

>Unstable has the "security through obscurity" as it updates often.
It's a rolling release... Is Arch "security through obscurity"?

>It can take weeks before a patched package gets from sid to testing
Sid has no patches (from Debian maintainers at least), only stable and testing have patches (stable-security and testing-security repositories).

>>58198950
Just a correction, sid package maintainers can and do make patches to packages obviously but there isn't a sid security team like there is for stable and testing and for many things they will usually wait for an upstream patch, meanwhile stable and testing security teams will patch the package even if upstream doesn't.

You are all completely stupid. Debian is outdated and insecure. More over, it's just a noobuntu spin that was made to attract power users. All it's maintainers are SJW and the distro is sponsored by jews and the liberal media.
The Debian project shows through it's public statements and manifests that it's clearly no aligned with the moral Christian values that made the US the great nation it came to be.
It's degenerate.

Arch Linux is superior to it in every way. It has bleeding edge packages, what means more stability and security, since you get all the last bug fixes.
It's also more configurable and extensible. On overall you just have more control over your computer.
Anyone that is serious about their OS uses Arch.

why, exactly, do many distros have a mail server running after install?

Debian has exim4 running. Why exactly do I need exim4?

*nix systems are by design multi user.
Users can communicate with each other and leave messages for each other using mail.
>>
>>58199602
There is zero reason for a mail server to be part of the basic install of any distribution.
>>
>>58199602
No, a mail server just seems like an attack vector I don't need.

>inb4 "b-b-but network time is an attack vector as well"
Yes, but I actually want network time, but I am wondering why I need a mail server.

>>58199631
I see, that makes sense.

Do I need it if I am the only person using this computer?

I know that my package manager puts important release notes as a local email in my home directory. Is this the kind of transfer handled by exim4?
>>
>>58199657
>Do I need it if I am the only person using this computer?
Probably. It still has many users running different software.
Even in extreme cases it has one user + root.

Yes.

It's not coded to boot if it doesn't find the font which valve deemed as necessary for the software to work?

It's not rocket science friend.

how is LFS for using as a main OS?
>>
>>58200334
LFS is not a distribution.
LFS is a tool to build your own distribution which you can later distribute.

You can use LFS to build debian, gentoo, ubuntu, fedora, whatever.

Do your research first before you post.

I just ordered a 4790k as an upgrade from my 4690k to help with the performance of my GPU passthrough. It should be coming on Thursday. I was thinking about getting a Xeon, but the Xeon that I was looking at performed significantly worse than the i7. I should have started out with the i7, but I didn't expect to need it when I purchased it.

Very stupid question that I don't how to properly articulate warning.

Terminal:
/Random/path$ command A (example scp or any command that takes time to finish)
>ZzZzZz
Type command B which depends on the proper completion of command A

Options that I use:
Option 1:
/random/path$command A&&command B
I misstype something or something don't work properly, have to figure out what went wrong and where, waste time because of my limited capacity of abstraction.

Option 2:
/Random/path$ command A
Open second terminal, cd to the path, write command, wait and press enter close first terminal, use second terminal from now on, annoying.

Is there any more convenient way?
I want to being able to type next command and being in the same directory?
Any .bashrc trick or whatever I'm just dumb and can't find any method that I like and it happens way too often.

What I meant is that when I need to type two consecutive commands on the terminal, my approaches feel like they can be improved.

I need to type both, one takes time, which prevent me from typing the next one, or I concatenate which often leads to failure, or I open shitton of terminals and seems unnecessary, or I just wait, but it buggs me.

Does it make more sense now?
I think I can rewrite it better sorry.

I will just delete it when I know how to write it better
