A few month ago I have disabled my AdBlock to see what Interwebz look like these days. It's been over 5 years, since I have seen it.

Fuck man... IT. WAS. HORRIBLE. How the FUCK do people navigate the web without even the basic ad blocker? Shit's disgusting!!

I lasted about 3 minutes. Never again.
>>
>>58165590
Don't use Windows. Problem solved.
>>
>>58165590
And use NoScript.
>>
>>58165663
I used NoScript for about a year but the problem is that it breaks the fuck out of so many sites, it gets tiring trying to figure out what elements to allow just to get basic functionality.
>>
>>58165657
It wasn't real ransomware. There's just a lot of nerve involved in begging you to turn off adblocker and then immediately trying to scam you.
>>
>>58165683
I understood that to be your point.

The thing is, common decency is dead today. Everyone will lie, cheat, and steal without a second thought. Everyone is in it only for themselves to a disturbingly sociopathic degree.
>>
I just temporarily disable JavaScript for pages that block adblockers, then re-enable it when I'm done.

Publishers need to stop using shitty, programmatic Google/Doubleclick ads and switch to native, in-house ads. Until they learn this, they will continue losing money.

>>

Once you set up core websites that you always visit, 80% of work is more, or less done. Everything else is a minor annoyance that gets rewarded by a huge benefit - your privacy and security. I am OK with that.

No, it's Freedom. Communism is state sponsored ads hardcoded into closed source browsers.

Why is it called ad "blocking"?

I don't "block" anything from showing up, I simply choose to not download the ad.

HTTP is mainly a pull protocol. A server can't force you to accept any given piece of data.

These people are building their product on a system which lets the user CHOOSE what content to download and display. If they don't like it, they can do something different.

Why even bother building your product on the web if you don't agree with how HTTP works?

Are webmasters mentally ill?

I agree.
It used to be that websites were run by people who had real jobs.
Now it's all entitled manchildren who came late to the Internet and don't know how it works, and are now trying to make quick money without any regards for security and viewerbase safety.
Common decency is dead.

>>

Your browser assumes that you want to pull everything that site A "refers" you to, unless otherwise specified.

Ad "blocking" systems fulfill this "otherwise specified" function. If a certain "resource" has been blacklisted, it will tell the browser to not fetch the resource.

My point is that the popup is forced on you by your browser's policy, and not the server or HTTP.

This is why you should use a hosts file, primarily. It's system-wide and the ad networks never make it past the lookup.

Ah fuckit. Even legitimate sites serve up malware because that's what the criminals buy ad time on. The ad industry has thrown dead goats into the well of goodwill for 20 years and don't seem to be changing their practices any time soon.

Fuck'em all. Use a hosts file. I've been doing it for quite some time now, and it's so much easier.

It even has a whitelist capability - just create a file called "whitelist" and put your sites in there - i.e., if you want to whitelist ads.google.com, it will take precedence over whatever lists the script pulls.

I don't see the issue. If you went into a store that bothered you with ads all the time, you'd go somewhere else. This is freedom, the site can do what it wants with their domain, and you are free to visit or not. Why are you crying about it?
>>
What fucking browser are you running and what websites are you idiots on where you actually get viruses from advertisements?

I've been using Chrome damn near since the day since it came out with Windows Update set to automatically install and restart. I only turn on adblock when I'm watching a stream of Linux ISO's, since those usually have a billion advertisements on them. I've never once got popped.

>Internet ads are getting more ridiculous because people keep blocking them.

Internet ads keep getting more ridiculous because the people that buy ad space /think/ that "punch the monkey" "gets more attention" than a static banner ad. It's the same kind of person who tells the ad maker "it should 'pop' more."

You know, morons.

When I am on a machine without adblock and I see a particularly offensive ad, I make sure to never click through the ad. I am hardly a unique individual, so I gather that there are many like me who make it a point to not click through ads that are there to annoy.

And if it's an interstitial ad, I never go back to the site itself.

I /would/ click through an ad for something I thought was interesting or useful or fun. I do click through /some/ ads on Facebook, because Facebook does not do ad networks - they host their own.

pop-ups haven't gone away; they've only changed and become more common. ad block helps a bit, yes, but browsing the web on your phone is a hellish experience, even on an iPhone.
It hasn't changed, really. it might've gotten worse since then.

What's the best adblock for Android?

You foolish faggots who believe that using adblockers is some kind of bad thing can continue to pay for the free access I get, and I'll continue using my adblockers as well. Thank you.

In these almost 20 years that I'm using the internet, I could probably count with a single hand the amount of times I've clicked on ads because I saw something interesting in them.
Most internet ads nowadays just direct you to more pages full of ads to try and milk views, instead of trying to actually sell you something.

I'd be interested in an automated tool that did just this. It'd be great to fuck with the people who actually pay for the ads.

I only unblock if I give a fuck about the site/youtuber or can't access the actual page. I'll even go in and click a youtube ad if I like the creator. Please do the same.

RE: Youtube overlay ads

On my last computer, I managed to block the ad images without blocking the ad. It's great. Pretty sure it still gives a legitimate impression.

I never disable my adblocking system and their begging just makes my dick harder.

Modern sites need to figure out a new way to make money.

Unfortunately though, I think the days of free content are coming to an end for the internet and most sites will be pay 2 view without ads.

There is only one reported case where people were sentenced here for pirating, only because they where running a open streaming website with 60 million monthly access.

On the site haveibeenpwned.com they even blocked the static text that just said who his sponsor was.
