No joke, this actually happened to a friend of mine with his Asus laptop while he was using it to DJ a weekly karaoke gig at a bar. Had to wait like 15 goddamn minutes before the music was back on.

Thanks Microsoft.

Basically you BELEIVE that Microsoft won't do anything like that and won't change your settings(it changes your settings back in other versions).

>>
i've heard this nightmare a few times but it seems like DJs should have their phones ready to go with some shitty pandora playlist or something for situations like this. hard drives can die, crashes can happen, etc. seems better to have a backup than wait 30+ minutes of silence

Not a single time my windows 10 machine has restarted while I was using it.

So an incompetent DJ basically. How is this Windows fault in any way? It even asks you if you want to update or postpone.
>>
>>58162499
>>58162519
This is the main problem, I think. The average computer user shouldn't have to do anything special to prevent their computer from shutting down while they're using it. Whoever was pushing for this to be the default behaviour at Microsoft must have forgotten that people use their general purpose computers for more than just casually browsing Facebook.
>>
>>58162548
You don't even need that, Windows 10 has a active hrs setting where it won't reboot for updates during the hrs you set.

So much stupidity and baiting in this thread.

>Windows 10 has a active hrs setting
Stop. This isn't an argument. See >>58162598. The average computer user _is_ retarded, but that doesn't mean their computers should shut down while they are using them. A lot of people rely on computers for their occupations but aren't especially proficient with them. Sane behaviour (like not shutting down while in use) should be the default, especially for the most popular consumer operating system. There is no excuse for this from Microsoft's side. Yes, professionals who use Windows laptops must now know about "active hours" by necessity, but that doesn't excuse Windows 10's update system from being a shitshow.

The thing is that having your computer updated is fundamental from a security standpoint. Most people, especially non techsavvy people, don't give a shit about updating, so having an automated way of downloading and applying updates, flexible enough to be able to postpone updates like you can perfectly do on Windows 10, but where the user can't disable it is the right thing to protect users. I'm pretty sure as a result, Windows 10 is going to be by far the most secure version of Windows.

Don't like it? Install an alternative. When the DJ installs Windows 7, disables automatic updating and forgets to enable it back because he doesn't even know what updating is besides some annoying nerd thing computers do, he may have a problem in the long run.
>>
>>58162696

No surprise there.
>>
>>58162696
If Microsoft really care about that, they should improve the state of online updates in Windows, but they can't just shutdown the computer to work around a lack of online security updates. The most fundamental property of a computer is that it is fit for purpose. This means it must not randomly switch off while in use, even when the user is incompetent. Security will always be second to that. The DJ is probably not going to get pwned by an OS-level 0-day during his set.

>Don't like it? Install an alternative.
Yes, I agree with this solution, and I hope incidents like this drive people to Mac (and, while I'm dreaming, a handful of people to desktop GNU/Linux.) Consumers have put up with Microsoft's shit for far too long.

There is a reason why Microsoft never used this term about Windows.

Should have learned how to do everything in Linux.

>>58162466
>I wonder when the industry will realise what an awful idea it is

If it's so awful then why do people still use Windows? Because people love windows, they like to get fucked by a big company. It's like owning a Mac only cheaper.

The whole point of the forced updates is so that people are inconvenienced as much as possible. Which is why it updates when microsoft knows it is currently in use, like this >>58162472

>>58162598
>>58162645
>>58162696
>>58162733
>>58162657

Microsoft knows when he uses the computer or not due to the spyware, there is no reason why they would do the automatic updates when the user is using the computer. They do it out of spite.

>>58162766
>The DJ is probably not going to get pwned by an OS-level 0-day during his set.
But he WAS pwned by the integrated malware which functions like a classical virus and restarts in the middle of his work.

>>58162499
Not really, people claim there is a way. But if they actually knew of a way then they would tell Microsoft and get thousands of dollars richer. And with every update they remove tons of such weaknesses. You would need to use a very old version of windows full of security holes.

>>58162548

Capture card and another computer/laptop running the stream maybe, so it doesn't interfere with game performance or vice-versa?
>>
>>58162436
>decided to update and restart

Sounds like user error, the only time it forces this is after it has been delayed from monthly patches being able to install for two weeks.

I find it hard to believe these peoples machines are being used 24/7 for weeks on end with no time to apply security updates, sounds like lazy people who think they know better when the sad reality is they are the stupid people that caused updates to be forced like this in the first place.
>>

>So tell me then, how does having this horrible hack make forced updates a valid and practical solution?
Well you see, windows needs to restart to install system updates because it can't access files in use by running processes (i.e. the operating system) so it needs to reboot and update these files before the OS fully starts up. But this is a pain in the ass because all the user's running programs get killed in the process so nobody wants to do it and they just disable updates or delay it indefinitely. So microsoft, afraid that this will leave windows insecure (apparently), force the updates eventually despite the user's protests.

I mean it kinda makes sense, but it's still a pain in the ass.
>>
>>58162908
>can't access files in use by running processes

>It's just shit piled on more shit.

At least when people work in unusual times, maybe they have some deadline then they get forced updates in the middle of the work.

This "hack" as you call it is a great way for microsoft to blame the user. Customers like to be fucked and they don't like to have control over their own computer. If they did they would get Linux.

>>58162908
>Well you see, windows needs to restart to install system updates because it can't access files in use by running processes (i.e. the operating system) so it needs to reboot and update these files before the OS fully starts up.

Bullshit. And even if that WAS true, that still doesn't even get close to excusing a forced restart while the user is in the middle of doing something.

Yeah.... No, come back once you leave you're mom's basement.

But the greatest difference I noticed with updates when going from Windows to Linux, right.
The updates actually fixed bugs. They brought more features. They made performance improvements.
Rather than just breaking my older software, slowing down my system, resetting and removing options and installing telemetry.

It's no wonder Microsoft has to force their updates when no one has any desire to use them. To the user, they seem to range between useless and damaging.
>>
>>58163017
>And even if that WAS true, that still doesn't even get close to excusing a forced restart while the user is in the middle of doing something.

Users like to be embarrased and fucked over by their technology. Apple does it all the time and they sell more every time they do. Microsoft will be a huge success when it inconveniences enough people.
