You can already do that now by setting up a hotspot.

As for the wifi mesh routers the bottleneck is not wifi itself but half-duplex wifi. If you could figure out a way to get two routers to communitate in full duplex then you would have enough bandwith to seriously fuck with the ISPs.

The real nail in the coffin would be local and state governments deploying internet as a utility like a few places have done

Refuse to buy TV services, pay only for internet. Buy HDTV antennas for local channels.
