my laptop became ridicuously slow overnight. I havent installed any new programs, nothing really changed.
Where would I begin to troubleshoot?

here's some shit.. wtf is this?
have you tried turning it off and on again

Google Drive is trying to synchronise data. Your laptop will work normally again when its finished.

Check your hard drive with a S.M.A.R.T. tool. It could be failing. 100% at 1-2 MB/s is way too slow for a working HDD.

First ask yourself this: Are you using Windows?
If yes: Remove it.

Install Gentoo.

>windows
found your problem, install gentoo

Look for a Windows services dropdown and end the Search Indexer task.
This is the #1 culprit of the mysterious 100% disk usage while nothing in the task manager is showing high usage.

cleaning out your hard drive and installing ubuntu
Sounds like you have windows 10, it is normal
What is your system uptime ? Could be that your laptop hasn't had a full shutdown in a while.
