What exactly is wrong with Xfce as compared to Xubuntu and other DE's? I have tested many combinations of DE/WM on Ubuntu, this is the least bloated by far.
The only other option is to install Gentoo from scratch.

Nothing is wrong with it. Rice the shit out of it.

It didn't have a network manager and software updater, had to manually install it. Also lightdm for auto start.
That took like 30 seconds and it was as functional as full Xubuntu install.
It's just a worse version of mate at this point

Compton is built into mate but so are many other useless features. I am currently divided between Mate and Xfce for my main laptop.

How so? Less RAM usage, and more customizable.

Nothing. I have a Mac that dual boots Mac OS Sierra and Debian Jessie for work. I use XFCE so that I can switch seamlessly between each operating system, since the UI looks and feels similar. XFCE is really nice and it's fast too. I highly recommend it.
For anyone going from Windows to GNU/Linux, try KDE. It's a bit bloated but you can clean it up and it feels a lot like Windows XP.

It's basically evenly customizable, and same for ram usage
>>58150749
Mate just has more support and is more updated, plus its far easier to customize and get a WM that isn't trash
>>58150749
Use both :^)

How did you find a computer with a 3rd gen i3 and 1gb of ram?
>>58150810
Its a VM. I am just playing around with Ubuntu minimal CD.
