Does running pwd call getcwd()? From what i've skimmed through in http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/coreutils.git/tree/src/pwd.c it seems that it implements a more robust version, if thats true whats the point of retaining the original getcwd() ?

I have riced my desktop praising thy name. It is dark and satanic.

Two questions: (Running Ubuntu 16.04)

1. How can I disable the F1 key so that the 'Help' popup doesn't pop up as seen on the right? I found online that if I go into preferences from the terminal and disable it there, it should work, but it didnt (assuming this is for gnome only?)

2. Is it possible to have the main folder in "folder view" and when I click inside it goes to "list vew"? How do I do that?

Question: Is the Arch Linux wiki generally applicable to different distributions, such as Debian. Other than some package related topics(obviously you won't use pacman specific information), can you basically use the whole wiki if you are on another distro?

>>58151061

if you take a common sense approach and can use google to understand the instructions you're about to follow, distro specific documentation is applicable to almost every other distro, this was true 10 years ago and is especially true now that almost every distro is using the same init system (systemd)

the few things on the arch wiki that don't translate well to other distros are extremely small things such as arch typically using non-standard tools for network management

Greetings,

I need to recover a delete video file off my rooted note 5.

I'm on linux, and the phone has been shut down since the deletion.

I'm reading that it's certainly possible using photorec but it needs the internal storage to be mounted as exactly that, mass storage and not MTP etc. I'm not sure how to do that. Any advice?

Alternately, I can use the android SDK to make a dump of the internal storage and then mount that (usb debugging is enabled), but still, don't know how to do it.

I'm hoping for a shortcut/fast guide for this. Anything?

Every binary-based distribution can be converted to source based (forexample git clone source locally and build every rpm you need yourself using provided tools in fedora).
Every source based distro can become blob-based (eg gentoo -> calculate linux).

Merry Xmas /fglt/, I need your help.

In these vacations I wanted to start learning Linux. I have here with me a notebook with no hard drive and a 8GB USB flash drive.

Is there anyway to install a light distro like Lubuntu(the notebook is not good) on the Flash Drive? Thanks in regards.
>>
>>58153674
Yes, just choose the flash drive in the partitioner. 8gb is not a lot of space though, I doubt it will fit.
>>
Sometimes some of my Xorg keyboard options get reset. The layout stays the same, but I apply a few tweaks via "setxkbmap". I do it that way because I don't want it global for every user.
Does anyone know which logs to check for this? Xorg log has nothing about changing options.
SOmeone else had a similar issue on here, but his whole layout got fucked up.
>>
>>58153688

Thanks for the reply anon.

I actually tried that, but it doesn't shows me the flash drive to create the partitions.
I don't know if it helps but I have no other of installing the OS but just the flash drive. Maybe it is not finding because of that?

>>
>>58153754
Yeah it can't install ontop of itself. Do you have more than one usb port? Maybe buy a bigger flash drive and use that. Or you could buy a small laptop harddrive and put it inside. That would probably be best, they aren't that expensive.

I'm on Arch, and I've been having trouble recently. It seems that X stops refreshing the screen sometimes after I alt tab from Emacs to Chrome when I watch YT. Does anyone here besides me have this issue? It has happened to me twice in the last 2 days.

Right now I enabled all sysrq keys so I can kill X easily when it hangs, because the sync key worked when I tried it every time, but that isn't perfect.

>Install debian and xfce on desktop
>Have nvidia card, install proprietary nvidia drivers
>everything displays fine, but massive tearing

I've looked online, and found two solutions:
1) use the nvidia driver's built in settings to turn on an option called "ForceFullCompositionPipeline"
2) use the compton compositor

In you guys' opinions, which of these fixes the nvidia tearing issue the best? Is there a third, better solution?

Option 1 works for me, but only for about half an hour, and then I start getting strange graphical artifacts on the whole screen.
Option 2 (compton) works decently, but I've noticed a lot of stuttering that wasn't there previously.

Any suggestions?

>>58153952
I haven't had that issue.
What emacs version are you using? If you're on 24, it might help to move to 25. They changed a lot of the rendering stuff in the latest release.
Otherwise, try switching from the default gtk3 version to the lucid or athena version, because gtk3 is a steaming pile. I know that debian has the lucid version as another package. If arch doesn't have a similar lucid package, you should build emacs from source.
>>
>>58154227
I was considering switching to a build of GNU Emacs 25.1 with GTK 2 instead of GTK 3. I didn't do it, because I have all of graphical widgets hidden from it, and I thought that it would make no difference to me, but now I should reconsider that.

I have built Emacs from sources before, so that shouldn't be hard at all, and I'd prefer to do it myself over using a package from AUR, because it's easy to do it.

Isn't there anything wrong with fresh releases of X?
>>
>>58154286
I don't know about the latest releases of X, but I am up to date with debian unstable.

I played a video on youtube with firefox (don't have chromium installed), and alt-tabbed to and from emacs with a bunch of buffers open, and didn't have any issues.

Also, is it possible that the problem is with your DE or WM, and the X server is fine? It might be a good idea to try reproducing the problem with a different WM and compositor
>>
>>58154347
It doesn't happen every time I do it, but it's often enough that I had to restart my computer every day once because of that.

As for my wm, I don't have any idea. Can I get any logs out of Openbox when something goes wrong?

As for compositors, I don't use any, because they have no advantages for me, and they just make the performance worse.
>>
>>58154369
I don't use openbox, no idea how it stores logs.

Good luck though
>>
>>58154369
The tearing will happen with any graphics card without compton. It's just the fact that there's no vsync without. You will have tearing issues. Stop avoiding compositors or stop complaining about tearing, one or the other.

I had the same experience, but guest additions and twiddling with the graphics and cpu settings fixed the problem for me.

If you are fine with shelling out some cash, vmware has some offerings for linux.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Reminder that if you are using bash you are using a non-white shell.

If you want to protect your white purity you have to delete /bin (which cotains bash) and reboot. Your system will regenerate the required /bin items as it needs

You can't unless you make your own distro or use one that uses something else for sh.

For me, I just switched my interactive login shell to mksh. It's better and lighter than bash. And then I just pretend bash doesn't exist even though most system scripts are using it.

Even LFS requires bash.
