I have an old-ass reciever, same as in pic related and I'm looking to upgrade.
I want to be able to play my console video games and movies in surround sound, but this old receiver only supports RCA inputs and the old Dolby Surround format.
Right now I have my consoles' (ps1,ps2,wii,ps3,x360,) audio channels connected to my TV via RCA with the exception of the ps3 and 360 connected with HDMI. This is then connected from my TV to my Receiver through RCA cables and to my surround speakers. Now, I learned that the ps2 supports surround sound through digital audio (superior to analog audio) via Optical Cables and I was disappointed when I learned that my analog setup is probably bringing me inferior sound quality and fake, emulated surround sound.

Any suggestions for a new receiver or audio setup? Im sure any modern receiver supports digital audio.

I havent bought a reciever in 13 years, but back then Harman/Kardon AVR series was a safe bet, good sound quality, lots of connectors and very good build quality. I gave my AVR 5550 along with Psb Stratus Silver to my dad years ago and it still rocks as if new.

I whould guess things have changed since then, but H/K is still around in the game last I checked. Have no idea about the quality nowadays tho.

And they don't look remotely as badass as before, thats for sure.

Honestly you could probably pick up any new mid range Yamaha or Onkyo A/V receiver and you'd be golden.

Pretty much standard these days for them to have hdmi/rca/optical inputs along with 7.1 output capability

What kind of price range is 'mid-range' for a receiver?

My personal definition for mid-range is about $500, although i've seen fairly loaded receivers for around $350ish. It really depends on what brand you go with.

Generally base model a/v receivers usually exclude inputs like toslink/coax but that's just my experience.

hmm, id have to be careful then. I want to make sure I get one with a toslink input.

>my grandma still has a jvc receiver from the early 80s
