I guess i can understand if you're used to streaming 1080p and yify quality, but once you take a minute to sit down and look at a higher bitrate encode, the difference is pretty fucking obvious to anyone actually paying attention.


Frame tearing and color banding were always huge issues with yiffy..

Not to mention the stupid fuck compressed the audio as well, audio for a 2 hour movie even in FLAC quality is going to be maybe 300-500mb, yet yify STILL would compress that shit down to ~50mb to save a little bit more space.

I'd rather have a 4GB encode with uncompressed audio than have a 3.5GB encode of the SAME video quality with shitty compressed audio with no dynamic range.


Though if I have the choice I'll take a remux or high bitrate encode over yify garbage any day.

that's the industry standard because video is 95% of the data.


You take a bluray, remux it (no compression) and you're left with a ~50GB file.

That 50GB file is 48GB of video and maybe 2GB of audio among 3-4 different tracks (commentary, alternate language, etc)

So you can EASILY compress the video to 8-10GB, then keep audio uncompressed and you've gone from a 50GB file to a 10-12GB file with uncompressed perfect audio.

Even Dolby TrueHD is only ~18Mbps (2MB/s) and TrueHD is Dolby's lossless codec and generally isn't used in favor of DTS which is lossy.

Some older blurays and newer blurays concerned about audio quality will use PCM audio and that can take up some real storage space, but this is pretty rare these days, i'd say 95% of bluray releases dont have PCM audio and instead use DTS or similar.

The "solution", if you want softer sounds louder and louder sounds softer, is to apply Dynamic Range Compression during playback.
I cannot make this any clearer to you.

Of course a better solution is to own a sound system capable of reproducing the full range of sound at realistic SPL levels.
Eg. Normal dialog at around 55 dB to 65 dB, gunshot at 115+ dB. Even 120 dB, which is enough to reproduce the entire 16-bit audio space is a compromise, due to the fact that in the real world, loud sounds such as gunshots or a 747 jet taking off are commonly louder, in the 130 dB to 140 dB range.

YIFY encodes are excellent for what they are; highly compressed video streams with faithfully reproduced stereo downmixes.

It's not the YIFY team's fault that you only own a pair of bookshelf speakers and a 30 watt amp instead of a 12,000 watt THX-certified system.
