If these were some sort of wonder tech that magically made all your music sound orgasmically good, I could see the point in it. But they're not. They sound the same as any other pair of passively powered earphones, use regular Apple earbuds for comparison. You gain nothing except muh wireless meme and you lose the capability to use them with pretty much every other audio output device around your house, which are standardized to either 3.5 or quarter inch anyway.

The way I see it, audio has to get converted to analog anyway, so cutting out the middle man is the best way to do audio. Yeah, Bluetooth and wireless are convenient, but having wires and also having wireless capability aren't as mutually exclusive as Apple is making it seem. Add to that the fact that they're trying to phase out analog connectors, you get more expensive headphones and peripherals cause now they also have to include a DAC (which will inevitably be shit if you want the price to not change). At the end of the day, it HAS to be analog audio that you listen to and no amount of marketing memes will change the fact that there HAS to be a DAC somewhere along the circuit, so getting rid of 3.5 is just about the most "fuck you" thing a company could do. My rant is more about the iPhone 7 and the way phones are progressing, so I can't really fault you if you use these with any other iPhone.

The AirPods are standard Bluetooth. They'll work on anything. The only thing that's proprietary is the W1 chip inside, which allows for faster and more straightforward pairing (relative to standard Bluetooth) for people in the Apple ecosystem.

They don't get any worse when you use them with something else. They just get better when you use them with an iPhone.

From everything I've read, they sound just like the earpods.
The earpods sounded okay for free pack in earphones, but i wouldn't want to pay even 20 dollars for them.

The wireless features would make them reasonable for 30-50, but at that point they really ought to be providing substantially better sound.
Plus, while I didn't find the earpods that uncomfortable, I know plenty of people hated their shape.

From the connectivity aspect, they seem great. If they're identical in sound to the EarPods though, not sure I'd be willing to spend money on them (since to me it's very noticeable that things sound muffled in the EarPods).

Also not sure if I'd use them on my laptop/desktop - websites unexpectedly blurting out sanic are pretty common these days, in which case I might as well just use EarPods.
