Off the "Web"

Hello frien/g/ds. I am working on gradually getting away from using the Web (as we know it) for everyday tasks. I have configured multiple servers in my home and on VPS to assist me. For instance, I save almost all of my personal files in a private server and utilize an sftp connection to retrive, rather than using google drive, etc.

Recently I've been investigating altenative Internet systems (such as pic related) and I am curious if any of you use any alternative systems or services to avoid common websites and corporate surveilance, etc.

I feel like this whole idea will start to come back in a big way once net neutrality has been gutted here in the US.

Any info or personal stories will be greatly appreciated.

I guess i should also mention I make use of a private email server a lot of the time, as well as a VPN account. (Generally these go without saying IMO but feel free to chip in if you have a comment on that).

You know, I've been trying to do this too. You're not alone.

If you don't physically control the server or encrypt all the data this will not stop governments.

Freenet is really slow but would be really useful in a dystopian scenery. Tor and i2p are usually better options.

Fortunately I don't live there. But I don't think it will change much, snowden leaks didn't at least.

Where do you get your files from?

You can safely use gmail if you use pgp.

I do control the physical server and use encryption for most things. Since AT&T is my isp i heavily encrypt most things. My VPS is Netherlands-based but I'm considering moving it.

Thanks for the other info, I'll look more into i2p.

Private trackers, datalockers, previously usenet, some newer trackers that aren't 100% honeypots.

All of this is over VPN to a seedbox, of course. However I'm trying to move away from all of these if possible.

What? Is it a VPS? If so how can you physically control it?

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
