keep pressing f5 as you boot your pc. this should bring up a menu to allow you to boot into low resolution mode.
once there you can manually set which resolution you would like to display in

also, make sure to update your gpu drivers.
I`m using a 1070 with my qnix2710 monitor and the first few drivers pretty much made my monitor useless

That solid colour slideshow is a common "screen saver" mode built into monitors when they aren't receiving input.

You DID open the menu and choose the HDMI as the input, right?
