What are actual advantages to systemd? As in, why did distros start using it?
Because it's better than SysV. And it was the shiny new thing. So shiny they couldn't see there were even better alternatives out there.

The main reason why most distros switched to systemd is because GNOME upstream requires systemd as a dependency. Yes there are the Funtoo patches of GNOME to make it work, but upstream doesn't support it.
Since GNOME is a popular Desktop Environment with a lot of power over the Linux world (since they are also influential with GTK in general), and most people don't want to bother with setting up an init system (users of Debian, Fedora for example) they switched to having systemd.
